BEHIND THE SCENES AT WINTER PARK

    http://www.vikings.com/news_detail_objectname_BehindtheVideo62006.html

    Author: Mike Wobschall, vikings.com

Ever wonder what goes into the production of a National Football League television broadcast? Or when players record the announcements we all see and hear on the big video board at the Metrodome during timeouts or after first downs? Had you been a fly on the wall inside Winter Park last Tuesday morning you would have some answers to those questions. The good news is that reading vikings.com will give you those answers as well.

Before each season, television networks such as the NFL Network, NBC and ESPN need to collect video headshots of players from each team. These videos are used during television productions to enhance the starting lineups, in-game graphics and post-game studio shows. Sometimes networks share the videos and other times each network must have their own images for network specific production requirements.

The process of capturing images of players from an NFL team is not an easy one. On Tuesday, a crew from the NFL Network arrived at Winter Park at 5:00 a.m. The Vikings marketing staff did the same and a large effort was required to ensure they would be ready to roll film once players began arriving at Winter Park.

Filming was taking place in two separate areas - one in the indoor practice facility and another inside Winter Park. The challenge Vikings staff members faced was getting players from one room to the other without missing someone or interrupting a video shoot.

Inside Winter Park, players were directed to a room where a video crew filmed "moving" headshots. Moving headshots are the video clips in which a player states his name and school or hometown. Since it is not a still image, they are referred to as moving headshots. The NFL Network will share those shots with NBC, who will again have NFL broadcasting rights beginning this season.

Then players were directed to the indoor practice facility, where a different crew would film spots for vikings.com and in-game Metrodome video board announcements. Former Vikings defensive lineman John Randle was on hand to assist in getting players from one spot to the other.

The Minnesota Vikings cheerleaders were also incorporated into the day's operations as they filmed spots for vikings.com and the video board as well.

The day was a long one for those involved in either photo shoot. Because the team was in the middle of organized team activities and meetings, time had to be used efficiently to ensure each player was available to the video crews.

At times we take for granted the effort involved in making the most common elements of a football game happen. It takes long hours and hard work by many members of the Vikings organization and others to ensure fans enjoy the best possible experience while watching the Vikings.

So, the next time you try to answer the HBO Trivia question or hear a thank you to the fans from Brad Johnson, remember there are many people working hard behind the scenes.
