Q: What would it have been like if Randy Moss would've been here and you guys would've gotten a chance to talk to each other on the field?
A: I think it would've been intense. Like it was out there today, loud and everybody excited and having a lot of fun. That's what it is, competition and you get a lot of people that go out there like that in practice I think it carries over to the games so I think it would've been real fun.
Q: How much is talking a part of your game?
A: People think I talk just to talk and talk back and forth, but you see me out there I'm hyping my teammates up. I'm getting the offense krunk, you know just getting everybody in the mind frame to go here and get the job done and do some work and have fun while we're doing it. I think it's going to carry over to the season.
Q: Do you think you're the spark this team needed?
A: I think it is. I think it's a team that just needed defense period. I think bringing me, Pat Williams, Darren Sharper and the guys we brought in helped it right off the bat.
Q: You were chirping at #19 (Troy Williamson) a little bit today, can you talk about that?
A: He knew I was there. He's a rookie, but you know I'm not trying to beat him down. I'm not just trying to go out here and kill his spirit, like I told him just keep doing what you're doing. You've been doing this for 15 years, don't feel like you're a rookie. You've been playing football a long time, just relax and do what got you here. I just want to make him feel comfortable - before I choke him.
Q: What impression did you have of him?
A: I think he's good. His speed is exactly what they said. He has the burners, he has everything (he needs) to be an elite receiver in this league. I think it's just going to take a little more work with Daunte and just learning the offense. But I think he's going to have a bright career here.
Q: The defense on this team hasn't been so good in the last few years...
A: I think Coach went and addressed that real good. I think we match the offense right now. The season will tell which side is better, but I think right now we've got what you call a total team. Now I think we just need to get together, gel together and become what you call a team.
Q: Is that a tough process when you're bringing so many people in?
A: The good part about it is that we didn't bring in a lot of young guys. We brought in people who have been in these situations. I've only been with one team. I've been with Washington and now I'm here so it isn't like I've been all over the league. Pat (Williams) has been around and now he's back with Coach Cottrell so it isn't like we brought in a lot of strangers.
Q: You know how much of a presence Randy Moss brought to the team. How does a team that lost that big of a presence move ahead?
A: Well, you have to realize, I don't think Randy Moss made up the whole receiving corp. We've got Nate Burleson, Travis Taylor we added as an addition, Marcus Robinson wasn't practicing today, Jermaine Wiggins, so I can name a lot of people with 40 or 50 plus catches last year. I think that the pieces of the puzzle are still there, we just need to gel together and come together as a team.
Q: More as a chemistry aspect though...
A: I think they have chemistry. I think Randy missed 5 or 6 games last year. I think Nate picked up and did a great job. I think Marcus Robinson, like I said, is going to do a great job. Like I said, as long as you have a great defense and a great quarterback you have a chance to be a contender in this league any year.
Q: Are you going to be the one to fill the hole personality-wise?
A: Yeah, I'm going to bring that. Not only with my big play ability, I'm going to bring personality and style a little flair to the defense. I can say the Purple People Eaters are back.
Q: The last couple of years, people have stood at the podium and said the defense is going to be better this year...
A: I didn't say better, I said back. I watched a lot of old film when (Alan) Page was rushing the passer, when it was the true Purple People Eaters and that's what this town loves. They love their defense and right now we're trying to get it back to where it used to be at. I'm not going to say better, I'm going to say we're going to be in the top percent, we're going to be a top five defense no doubt.
Q: How does this defense match your style of play?
A: I'm going to do what I have to do. I'm going to be there. I'm going to be that building block. I'm going to be there for the people when they don't make the plays they want to make and I'm just going to be that cornerstone of the defense. When you're bringing in people like Pat Williams, he makes my job a lot easier.
Q: You talked about Randy Moss' personality. He was one of the main personalities on this team. Is that the kind of role you want to have?
A: That's my role. I think I'm a little more teamier (or more of a team player) than he is. I like to mess with everybody, not just my side of the ball. I'm messing with Jose Cortez today telling him he had a long practice and you know he probably kicked the ball two or three times. I'm just trying to loosen everybody up. Let's have some fun, get the job done and get some work in and hopefully we're going to take this into the season like I said.
