    Anatomy of a Winning Streak

    http://www.vikings.com/NewsArticle_winningstreak_122007.aspx

With their 20-13 win over the Chicago Bears on Monday night, the Vikings accomplished something that’s only been done by the franchise three times since 2000 – they won their fifth consecutive game.

Even given the Patriots remarkable 2007 season so far, winning five straight in the regular season doesn’t qualify as a common feat. Eight teams have done it this season and, if both the Vikings and New York Giants make the playoffs, all of them will have qualified for the playoffs. In 2006, only seven teams rattled off five in a row, and six of those teams made postseason appearances (Tennessee did not).

For a team that began the year 1-3 and was 3-6 at one point, a five-game winning streak is a significant development, especially considering the string of wins has the Vikings poised for a spot in the playoffs, if they keep winning.

Following each win during the streak, Vikings Head Coach Brad Childress has been asked why his team is playing better. Coach Childress cites execution of the game plan, reduction in penalties and just finding ways to win as catalysts for the winning. While the answer may vary from week to week, his response is generally the same and it’s no doubt accurate and genuine.

But what else is behind the Purple’s five-game winning streak? The simple answer is composed of two words, or one name – Adrian Peterson. But upon further review, the reasons for Minnesota’s improved play extend far beyond their rookie superstar and include more reasons than those that Coach Childress often talks about with the media.

Below, vikings.com has identified four developments over the past five weeks that have contributed to the Vikings five-game winning streak...

Here would be my list of why we are winning, ordered in descending importance:

    1. The individual players just playing harder
    2. The offensive line blocking extremely well, and the TEs and WRs also blocking GREAT.
    3. Peterson
    4. The defense keeps us in a lot of games.
    5. Tarvaris has improved a lot.

We are undefeated when scoring more than 20 points. That is incredible. As long as the offense is average, we'll win. When it is above average, we'll crush people.

    Who is Peterson?

I haven't heard of that name before.

And it was like that last season too, probably not those exact numbers, it made it so damn frustrating.

That is why I couldn't understand all the griping about our defense earlier this year. They let up 23 points, and people would be pissed! That said, they have played even better during this streak! Point totals of 22, 10, 10, 7, and 13. Amazing.

Re: Anatomy of a Winning Streak

Here are some of my reasons in a nut shell:

New and Young players are starting to get comfortable with each other...know what to expect. Building trust.

It has been made very clear to everyone that the team is now in control of it's playoff fate.

New QB is learning fast...still making some errors but getting more comfortable with the system and play calls with every week.

Tarvaris is also doing a much better job of recognizing defensive scheems, especially blitzes at the line. He's also tuffening up and seems to able to take lickin and keep on tickin as of late. Nice to see some durability.

Defense has stepped up and maintained a high level since the GB debockle.

Teams facing us have decided to make stopping AD and our running game a priority and virtually forgot about the possibility that Tarvaris could also make enough plays to TEs, Backs, Wrs or running on his own to beat them.

We have managed to stay realitively healthy as a team. Even with Winfield and AD down others have stepped up and done a great job.

    Cheers!
