Alright, you caught me, I'm an idiot...
What does SKOL mean? I'm not from the area nor do I have an scandinavian ancestry that I know about. I saw the picture of the Skol beer in the free beer forum but obviously it's not just a beer reference. I've been poking about the site hoping to find a definition but I've yet to find one.
Point and laugh if you wish, but could someone explain it to me?

Basically in a nutshell it means cheers.
Someone on here told a story about norse warriors used to drink from the skulls of their victims hence the cheer.
When I studied into it a bit the definition I came up with was it was a drinking game. Something about a coin in the bottom of your mug. Yelling essentially "bottoms up"
Tons of people don't know what it means I had no clue when I started posting here. I just looked around and said what the hell did I get myself into? Freaks I tell you they are all freaks.

Trust me, you're about the millionth person that has asked what that means so don't feel like an idiot!
I think it's like a greeting or cheers type of thing, but I'm not positive.
I get the most pissed off looks from people with my VKG 4 LFE Wisconsin license plate, and I LOVE IT!!

Thanks to my grandpa who lived 2 blocks from the old met, i found out what SKOL meant at a young age.
Then when i came to SLC for the olympics the bus we took to the Hockey game had a huge group of Fins and they passed around some drinks and had everyone on the bus saying SKOL! it was a blast

Re: Alright, you caught me, I'm an idiot...
I am from Sweden and i have also been confused about the Skol thing, in Sweden when you have a drink (alkohol or none alkohol) there is a custom to say skål to the other person(s), the other person(s) says skål and both (everyone that is "skåling" (in swedish "skålar")) have a sip from whatever you are drinking. So its like "cheers".
I guess that skål sounds like skol.
The reason i have been confused is that you guys use it everywhere. :-)

Re: Alright, you caught me, I'm an idiot...
It must be a derivation of skål.
Either that or maybe it is the following definition from an online English dictionary:
Definition: Fortran pre-processor for COS (Cray Operating System).
Hmm...
