    2006 Defense

How do you guys feel about this defense?

DLine - looks to be rather good, at least at putting pressure on the QB.
But can they hold up against the run as well?

LB - huge ?, I really expect Harris to absoultely crumble and lose his starting job by the 4th week.
2 terrible penalties in the preseason.
He's looked OK at times, but when we start using more complicated defenses and the offense moves a little faster I think we'll see the Napoleon of old.
EJ is intriguing though, he has played well and been in the right position often this preseason.
When things speed up, I hope he keeps his head in the game cause he can make some plays.

DBs - Smoot/Winfield are very good as are Sharper/Smith are also very solid corners.
Lack of any depth may hurt them eventually.

Overall I think this could be a very good D this year.
Better coaching will put this talented group in better position to succeed.
    Can't wait for Monday Night!

There were certainly some things in the preseason to get excited about.
Definately a step in the right direction, but we'll see if it can mature in the regular.

Offense concerns me, however if we become the Super Bowl Ravens (All defense - no offense) in still in!

Sharper and Smith are not corners.

anyone know what the deal with devonte edwards is?? how long he's out.
broken arm hurts, but is he officially done for the season.
it depends on the extent of the break.

The defense seems good but I dont think we have enough depth in the secondary.
So I sure hope there are no big injuries to the secondary.

    Skol Purple Kool Aid.
    Welcome to PP.O.
Don't forget to introduce yourself inthe Free Beer forum.

I agree with most of your analysis of our 2006 D, particularily when you said that the lack of depth at corner could hurt us.
I think Smoot is a great CB, but his crappy tackling skills are going to get him hurt.
The loss of Edwards hurt us more than I like to admit.

I think Napo will be fine this year.
His penalities were dumb, but he is still agood fit for this defense.
    Last year he was misutilized.

    Re: 2006 Defense

thanks for the welcome Nodak - I wish I shared your optimism on Napo.
Good LBs in the NFL are the ones who adhere to their responsibilities and then make the play.
Napo overpursues and abandons his gaps/coverage areas far too easily.
If last year he was misutilized (which very well could be the case), then he was misutilized for years in Oakland as well.

If he can stay at home then fly to the ball he'll be OK.
But I don't hold out much hope at this point.
Monday night will tell us a LOT.
