2001 Draft Grades
A number of the articles I've read about this weekend's draft started out by saying that you can't grade a draft until three years down the line. Then they go and grade this year's draft, but that's beside the point. Listed below is what the Vikings did in the 2001 Draft. How would you grade the results now?
Round 1:
(27th pick) Michael Bennett, RB, Wisconsin
Round 2:
(57) Willie Howard, DE, Stanford
Round 3:
(69) Eric Kelly, CB, Kentucky
Round 4:
(130) Shawn Worthen, NT, Texas Christian
(131) Cedric James, WR, Texas Christian
Round 5:
(157) Patrick Chukwurah, OLB, Wyoming
Round 6:
(189) Carey Scott, CB, Kentucky State
Round 7:
(225) Brian Crawford, T, Western Oregon
Only two players from that draft are still on our roster. Bennett was a strong pick, but Kelly is just a nickel corner at best. The site where I found the draft info didn't list trades, just the picks, so I can't factor any of that kind of information into my judgement. Knowing all of that, I'd have to give the Vikes a C- at best for their 2001 draft. That's just based on the strength of Bennett. He can be a game-breaker. Without him, the draft would have to be an F.

I liked Chukwurah, but I agree that draft wasn't very strong... I'd give them a C

If you look closely at the players half of them arent with us anymore and i believe that draft was the biggest bust since the trade with the cowboys to get hershel walker (Egg in our face) id give them a c- and thats me being nice.

I jsut did som quick follow up. It looks like Howard, Worthen, and Crawford aren't even in the league any more. James is on the cowboys, Chukwurah is on the Broncos, and Scott is on the Raiders. None of the three looked like they got any serious playing time last year. This is all according to ESPN.com.
So to recap, three years later and only 2 of the 8 are still on our team, and half of the remaining players aren't even in the league. We're lucky we got Bennett that year, or it would look horrendous.

lets hope that this draft class from this year does a lot better!! We all know that on paper we have a good draft, but I'm curious to see how it all pans out in the long run

Re:2001 Draft
Hard to get to down on Willy Howard since he looked promising and suffered a career ending injury...
I guess I like Kelly a little more than most...
Draft would get a C- from me also, Bennett being a starting caliber RB is big, but most of this draft was a complete loss...

Hate to finally agree with you, bovy (and don't expect it to become a pattern), but I would agree with you. Too Small Reynolds is probably one of the biggest Packer busts this side of Mandarich. Jue is useless, Marshall is pretty much a special teamer, and Ferrario and Martin have been disappointments, and may not be with the team this year. Fergie may end up being a decent receiver, and he's starting to come around, but he's obviously not the class of the league, like Owens, Holt, or Harrison.
Have you ever seen a race of turtles, and they all go the wrong way instead of towards the finish line?
Welcome to the NFC North.
