Yahoo suing NFLPA over fantasy stats

MINNEAPOLIS (AP) -- Yahoo Inc. has sued the NFL Players Association to try to ensure it won't be sued for using player statistics, photos and other data for its popular online fantasy football game.

The lawsuit filed Monday in federal court in Minneapolis alleges that a licensing arm of the players union has threatened to sue if Yahoo does not pay it royalties for the use of publicly available player data.
Setting aside the stupidity of the article headline ("What fantasy did the NFLPA have about Yahoo?
Snogging them on the 50-yard-line with a stadium full of Rush Limbaugh impersonators watching?"), this is fabulous news for those of us who DON'T want to shell out big bucks to play FF.
Yahoo is our hero in this one.

Why should they have to pay for publicly available data?

So long as they're not using NFL logos, copyrighted materials, or other nfl trademarks, why would there be a problem?

As far as I understand, that's what the courts have already ruled with respect to baseball.

From what I understand, the courts rulled that baseball could not charge for use of the names and the game stats.

Yahoo is not only going after names and stats, but (and I quote from PFT) “likenesses (including, without limitation, numbers), pictures, photographs, voices, facsimile signatures and/or biographical information (including but not limited to player statistics).”

I think the case would be a slam dunk for Yahoo if they were just going for names and stats. Going after the likenesses, pictures, photographs, voices, facsimile signatures, and biographical information might be getting a bit greedy. That seems like the exact thing that the NFLPA liscensing agreement was set up to protect.

You don't have to shell out big bucks to use nfl.com, and it's probably my favorite, of all the ones I've tried.

Regardless, I'm still first, or at least near the front of the line, for pp.o fantasy. I hope.

Is that why they charge for real time stats when every other FFB site it's for free? I have always hated Yahoo for FFB sites.

We had a couple of off shoot PPO leagues on Yahoo last year.
I hope the managers of those leagues pick something like "Fox" this year instead.
Many many thanks to my talented friend Jos for the new Sig.http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v343/josdin00/Vikings/Marrdro_sig.jpg
