What’s more important: Coach or QB?

What’s more important: Coach or QB?

January 14th, 2008 – 12:14 PM
by Kevin Seifert, startribune.com

A few weeks ago, Sports Illustrated’s Peter King noted how 2007 was progressing and offered this suggestion: NFL teams are better off throwing their resources at a high-profile quarterback than a big-name/or star coach. In many ways, this postseason has proved King right.

It's no secret that good players make coaches look good. A coach can implement a plan strategy and style of play, but the players must execute. The hardest position in all sports is the NFL Quaterback, and a good one can make, a coach look like a genious. Look at numb nuts McCarthy in Green Bay.

What's more important: arms or legs?
This is a ridiculous question and Seifert's justification for his summary is equally weak.
There will always be a flux of QBs as well as coaches that are in different stages of their careers.
Effective leadership both on and off the field is essential if a team is to succeed.

Thanks for the read my friend.

This guy is a yutz and the reason so many people don't understand how important it is to have a coach.

Old cliche'.
Players play and the Coaches teachem how to play.

Seriously, who in thier right mind would think that the players could just run out there under any guy and be productive.

What he should have looked at was how many teams have won multiple SB victories with the same HC and stable front offices vice who was on the field at any given time at the QB position.
Many many thanks to my talented friend Jos for the new Sig.http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v343/josdin00/Vikings/Marrdro_sig.jpg

I'm to the point with the Tarvaris situation where I just want Childress to fill every other position with enough talent to get the job done and just keep Tarvaris in there. If that doesn't get the job done, get a real QB in there and we'll already have all the pieces ready.

Coach is just as important as quarterback play. They go hand in hand.

A couple examples of how a case can be made for either
McDoofus over in GB has Brett Favre
Billick had Trent Dilfer

Spoken like a good coach!

Seriously, whoever wrote the title of Seifert's article doesn't know football and should be covering Britney Spears. Coaching and QB play are at least equally important to the team's success. And how much money a coach is paid doesn't correlate with how good he is. Here is King's article:

http://sportsillustrated.cnn.com/200...k14/index.html

I'd like to see owners stop looking for the miracle cure when they pick a coach. I've got proof it doesn't work. Since 2000, by my count, NFL teams have hired seven big-money geniuses (average salary per year: $4.3 million) to take their teams to the promised land.

And he ends his point with:

Don't go looking for an Urban Meyer to save your offense, or a Parcells to drag out of retirement again to put the fear of God in your undisciplined team. Doesn't work.

Re: What’s more important: Coach or QB?

If we had one or the other I'd be happy. As of right now, we don't know what we ahve with Childress, nor do we know how far TJ can develop.

Re: What’s more important: Coach or QB?

It isn't an either or question.
It might be weighted though.
So I would say that without a guy on the field to lead the play of the game, you are screwed.
A consistant QB can carry some bad coaches along for the ride.
It definitely helps to have a good coach also.
Moral of the team is very important.
Without the team going in a positive direction during Mon through Sat, it is pointless even getting on the field on Sunday.
Coach plays a big part in that moral.
