Re: what is the greatest rivalry in sports?

I would have to say the greatest rivalry in sports to me was:

Getting my ex-wife to let me watch Vikings football on a Sunday afternoon.

She was & still is a Packer fan.

    Ohio State and Michisuck.

You gotta look at how many years they have been playing.

The Sox and Yankees thing has only been huge that past 10 or so years.

    Yes & no.

She will become a Vikings fan, but no conversion has to be done. She has yet to see a single NFL football game & I'll be sure to start her off on the right foot.

As a matter of fact, she is already a Vikings season ticket holder & she doesn't even know it.

My plan is to try to have her State side before the beginning of next season.

She doesn't want me to wait until next August to come & visit her when Ned & Margie go.

    She wants me there now!

Yes, that's true. And then it wasn't much of a rivalry for the next 80 years. I've lived in both Massachusetts and New York City and I can tell you that it was heated, but not the "foaming at the mouth" hatred we're seeing now.

    =Z=

Thanks to Josdin for the awesome sig!

    UND vs. NDSU Football games

I would have to say that the former football games played between the Univesity of North Dakota (UND Fighting Sioux) and North Dakota State University (NDSU Bison) were a great rivalary.

NDSU moved up from D-II to D-I and the rivalry ended a few years ago. Both teams were power houses in the D-II. UND won the final football game ever played between the two rivals in overtime and thus they hold the Nickel Trophy forever.

Even though both schools arent the biggest schools population wise, the two were great rivals with strong traditions of winning national championships. It was sad to see that this rivalry had to end.

The games were filled with racial motivated tensions (sad but true....statements related to Native Americans...thus the Fighting Sioux nickname and all that came with bashing them), territory fueds, state bragging rights for a whole year and ownership of the Nickel Trophy until the following season. It was very intense and always sold out!

Maybe not one of the top 10 of all time but definely one of the best in D-II football.
