Re: Vikings have cakewalk and Packers have difficult schedule...

Eh ... we have went around in circles on this a million times. Strength of schedule is not known until about 10 games into NEXT season.
It is obvious that the strength of schedule is all based on strength of division the year before ... and of course the Packers are going to be lower than the Lions, Vikings and Bears. They played each of us twice at 8-8, 6-10 and 7-9 while we all played them twice at 13-3. Kind of skews things because the teams with the best records don't play themselves.
Bottom line is the divisions separate from strong to weak. All of the NFC North is in the top 12, all of the AFC South is in top 10, the AFC North makes up four of the top seven and the NFC East is all in the top 16.
Meanwhile, the entire AFC West is in the bottom seven and the entire AFC East is in the bottom 10.
Preseason strength of schedule is skewed heavily by divisional play. We will see how tough our schedule is by Week 10 next season ... and it wont look that good, because all of our opponents are starting out a combined 0-9 :-)

Re: Vikings have cakewalk and Packers have difficult schedule...

I don't completely discount the SOS when I look at what a team might do in the upcoming year, however, it is almost a outdated concept what with the advent of FA (you can almost buy a whole new team every year) and the ever increasing movement of players throughout the league.

Teams of the 60's and 70's were pretty much inked with respect to who they had talent wise so a guy could almost always see what thier team was going to go up against.

Anyway, here are a couple of articles on SOS and how it applies to point spreads and betting (kindof/sorta).

Re: Vikings have cakewalk and Packers have difficult schedule...

I'm always bugged at how the schedule makers do us no favors with bye weeks.

Vikes play two teams coming of bye weeks, plus a team coming off a 10 day layoff (Detroit coming off Thanksgiving).

Pack plays no teams coming off a bye, however they do play one team that is coming off an 11 day layoff when they travel to Chicago Dec. 22.

It can be argued that one of the teams we play coming off our bye also had a bye the previous week, however it should be an advantage for the team coming off a bye that they are more rested than the other team... such as when the Pack comes off their bye, they play a team that had a game the week before... Ten, who just happens to be coming off a Monday night game... just another bogus schedule snafu in favor of the Pack.

It sounds like I'm whining, doesn't it?

Strength of schedule, tough division this, tough division that.
Good teams win "easy" games, good teams win "tough" games.
The Vikes are a good team, I have said repeatedly, before Jared Allen, before the draft, before the schedule was made, that this team should finish with no less than 10 wins...been saying it for months.
I don't care about the schedule, the boys need to buck up and execute and entertain us...we've been waiting many years!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! !!!!!!!!!!!!
What happens when two good teams meet?
Ties are rare so someone has to lose.
Does that mean the Good team that got beat isn't a Good team anymore?
Yeah, that's what I think most people see it as.
Truth of the matter is that a lot of random things happen in a football game.
Anybody really believe that the Giants were a better team than the Patriots (okay, I'm sure some people do, but they're wrong)?
I'm sure you remember the Vikings loss to the Lions in week 2.
Each team missed a FG late in the game, and the Lions ended up winning in OT.
Shortly thereafter it was gloom and doom on here, but at least we would have one of the top picks in the draft so we could get Brohm.

Back to the strength of schedule thing...

Just to give a little perspective, I took a look at the strength of schedule rankings for 2007 both before and after the season.
Unfortunately, the numbers for 'after' included the playoffs, but excluding the playoff teams yields about the same results.

Those results show that the preseason numbers are basically meaningless.
The average difference between the preseason SOS percentage and the postseason SOS percentage was about 3 percent.
Considering that the difference between the toughest 2007 preseason SOS percentage and the easiest was 8 percent, that 3 percent is pretty significant.
Oh, and about two-thirds of teams will end with a SOS percentage and ranking very different from the preseason number.

So just as we all already know, the preseason numbers are pretty much meaningless.
When the age of the Vikings came to a close, they must have sensed it. Probably, they gathered together one evening, slapped each other on the back and said, "Hey, good job." - Jack Handey [Deep Thoughts]

Well we get to play the Lions and Bears twice this year.. 4 wins.. we owe the Bears this year. Split with the Vikes .. so we need to muster 4 wins elsewhere to make the playoffs.. not worried.

LOL! The Bears owned your ass last year & that was with Favre. You know have an injury prone unknown QB hurling the ball & a green horn backup who hasn't even been with the team a month. You'll be luck to come out of the division with 3 wins.

Any cheesedick who says they're aren't worried is in denial.

Prior to the Dallas game, his two previous appearances resulted in injury.
