I never understood letting go of good, proven players like McNair, Culpepper, Javon Walker, etc. for anything in the second round and beyond. The odds are that they will never receive anything near that quality of player from the pick they get. Just doesn't make sense to me.
Because the situation dictated that was all they could get...look at the Pep trade...it was all we could get for him. Makes the Herschel trade all that much WORSE in retrospect!!!

In the case of McNair, he wasn't being a pain in the jiggly butt at all though. So they basically lost a solid player for a fourth round pick for no reason.

That wasn't the case with McNair. The Titans altered his salary every year, pushing a larger and larger cap number back until it got to the ridiculous size it is now. Fact is, the Titans had no choice but to release McNair because if they had kept him, they wouldn't have had the cap room to sign their rookies.

The fact they managed to get a fourth-round pick is nothing short of spectacular.

Considering the Titans would have had to release him so they could sign their rookies, which was a better trade the Culpepper one for a 2nd or this one for a 4th with the possibility of it being a 3rd?

Or even Artis Hicks. We got him for a late round draft pick, eventhough he established himself as a possible starter/solid backup at his position. Odds are, we would have ended up cutting whoever we drafted with the pick we gave away.

True...the Ravens COULD have waited to see if the Titans would cut him...but the Titans knew that they wouldn't have much leverage if they had waited any longer to pull the trigger on this deal. The Ravens knew that they wouldn't get a better deal for a player 3 years removed from co-MVP. Could end up being a BETTER deal than the Dolphins think they got for Daunte.

It cost the Ravens a fourth round draft pick to get McNair approx. one month earlier than they could have had him without giving up any compensation. McNair wasn't willing to restructure his contract and the Titans couldn't afford his salary and still sign their draft picks.
