    Tagliabue won't hear Foley case

But arbitration date could be set soon

    Pioneer Press

NFL Commissioner Paul Tagliabue won't be presiding over fired Vikings vice president of player personnel Fran Foley's arbitration hearing against the team.

Tagliabue, who was in St. Paul on Tuesday to speak to a House-Senate conference committee on behalf of the Vikings' stadium proposal, said he hasn't paid much attention to the Foley situation.

"I really don't know anything about it," said Tagliabue, who suggested that the Vikings hire a personnel executive this offseason, "other than the fact that an issue exists."

Brian McCarthy, the NFL's director of corporate communications, said the league's first order of business in the Foley case is to settle on a time when the involved parties can meet.

"(Special counsel) Jay Moyer will oversee the meeting," McCarthy said. "We'll work closely with Mr. Foley's attorneys to come together. It's just a matter of nailing down a time and date for the hearing."

Asked how long that might take, McCarthy said: "The meeting probably will take place within the next couple of weeks. After that, we'll have to wait and see."

The Vikings fired Foley on May 3, three months into a three-year contract, because of what sources have said was an abrasive personality and disagreements with staff members, including coach Brad Childress. Before being terminated, Foley also admitted to some embellishments on his résumé.

Foley's attorney, Jeffrey Kessler, contends his client was wrongfully terminated and deserves full compensation for his $1 million-plus contract, as well as "additional damages."

Kessler commenced the arbitration process May 5 when he filed a complaint with the NFL office; the Vikings have until Monday to file an answer to that complaint. Because Foley was terminated without a settlement, Kessler said they will be asking for an expedited hearing.

"We want it to happen as soon as possible, and I'm sure the Vikings will want to have it as far away as possible," he said. "I don't think they have much of a chance of prevailing, quite frankly."

Vikings vice president of operations and legal counsel Kevin Warren didn't respond to a phone call seeking comment.

Kessler said he has asked that Vikings owner Zygi Wilf and team president Mark Wilf be available at the hearing in addition to Childress and Warren.

Goodspeed out for season: The Vikings didn't get through their weekend minicamp without one costly injury, as fullback Joey Goodspeed suffered a torn anterior cruciate in his left knee that will keep him out for the entire 2006 season.

Childress declined to provide any injury information Monday at the close of minicamp, but the fourth-year player is expected to undergo surgery in the next couple of weeks. The usual recovery period is eight to 12 months.

Goodspeed, who was expected to back up starting fullback Tony Richardson, signed with the Vikings during the offseason after sitting out 2005. He spent the 2003-04 seasons in St. Louis.

Clip and save: John Czarnecki, writing on "There is great news within the Dolphins camp. New quarterback Daunte Culpepper appears to be ahead on his rehabilitation and could be ready for the start of training camp. Maybe he won't be ready to get hit, but Culpepper should be ready to participate in most drills. He looks super. That's the word."

Culpepper, whom the Vikings traded to Miami in March for a second-round draft choice, is attempting to come back from triple-ligament surgery on his right knee.
