    Super Bowl Lottery Policy

Every year, starting in about November, talk seems to pick up around fandom about the Super Bowl and how to score tickets. Since I fully expect the Vikings to go to the Super Bowl this year  I thought I would start the year off right and publish my new found knowledge of the Vikings Super Bowl Lottery Policy.

Actually, this is the first time I have seen a definative policy in print for the Vikings, which is really why I am sharing... (although I still expect them to go to the Super Bowl this year :grin

    Super Bowl Lottery
If the Vikings are participating in the Super Bowl, there is a computerized "lottery" to determine which Season Ticket Owners will be eligible to purchase tickets. Please note: Only Season Ticket Owners who purchase all of their post season tickets (the same number of season tickets purchased for the regular season) will be eligible for the Super Bowl Lottery. The number of chances that each ticket owner recieves is based on the number of years that the owner has held tickets multiplied by the number of seats they currently have (Example: If a ticker owner has had tickets for five years and has four seats, they will receive twenty chances in the lottery). Each lottery winner will be able to purchase two seats. When the Vikings are not a Super Bowl participant, we receive only enough tickets to cover the internal needs of the club.
I actually never knew about the number of years multiplier thing. Each team can choose how it wants to distribute its alloted tickets. Most have some type of lottery system, but not all. For those of you who are curious, here is the ticket breakdown for a Super Bowl:
    * The two participating teams each get 17.5% of the stadium seats
    * Each of the 29 remaining teams receive 1.2% of the stadium seats (or 35% of the total)
    * The NFL uses 25% for corporate sponsors, charity and other league related needs
    * The Host Team receives about 4% of the stadium seats
    * General Fans are allowed to purchase the remaining 1% via the annual NFL Super Bowl drawing. (Sorry, but it is too late to enter this year. Entries have to be recieved by June 1st...)

This is so dumb. Why is football the only sport where the championship game is played at a neutral field? It's friggin lame. Can you imagine how much more entertaining the SB would have been last year if it had been played at either Heinz or Qwest Field? I mean, sure, you should still reserve some seats for the visiting team to make it a little more even, but as it stands, the SB is all about the hoopla and celebrity types and not in the least about the fans. Screw that.

IMO That's why the atmosphere always seems different at the SB, one third of the crowd is true football fans, the rest are made up of people who probably couldn't give a toss about the sport.
