Jerry Rice caught passes from two of the greatest quarterbacks in NFL history. He played for the most influential offensive coach of his era, surrounded by a roster flush with talent....

Re: Start with Rice No. 1, Moss No. 2 in best WR debate
Very interesting read my friend.
I hate these kinds of polls/discussions.
Just to damn hard to try to compare the players of old against the players of today and everyone in between.
The numbers don't just lie. They also cheat and steal, particularly across eras.
Seasons have grown in length from 12 to 14 to 16 games.
The NFL has expanded from 12 teams to 32 teams.Defensive backs could no longer rough up receivers more than 5 yards past the line of scrimmage, even if the ball remained in the quarterback's possession.Receivers now stand upright at the line of scrimmage, allowing them to read increasingly complex defenses before the snap. Short passes have replaced running plays in some cases. Many many thanks to my talented friend Jos for the new Sig.

Now then, as you might have seen on a couple of other SBNation blogs (namely Hogs Haven and Stampede Blue), Mike Sando of ESPN.com put together hist list the other day of the Top 10 NFL receivers of all time.
Sando had a panel of "experts" come up with their list of the Top 10 receivers in the history of the National Football League, and here's what they came up with:

Because Hutson is so far removed, you don't hear the hype.
I saw a documentary on his career, and I was super-impressed.
He was a highly dominant player.
He also changed the way coaches thought about the passing game, forever positive.

Irvin ahead of Cris Carter is an absolute disgrace.... and I love his argument about Moss vs Harrison & Owens, because its very true.
Up until now when Moss has been with the Patriots, the majority of his career (post Reed & Carter) has been with a subpar receiving corps lining up across from him.

Rice and Moss are clearly the top 2

I think that article did a big disservice to WR's like Swann, Stallworth, Rashad,Monk, Drew Pearson, Jefferson, Charlie Joiner etc.
Irwin couldn't handle the jock of half of those guys and Harrison would have been average at best back when things were much more physical.

Why is there such hatred for Randy on this board?
Personally i loved the guy and I still think he is the best WR i have ever seen.
Other will argue Rice and his records but no one demanded as much
attention from the defense as Moss. You couldn' line up 1 on 1 with him nd even wen double covered, he came up with the ball.
Moss had the speed, the size, the hands and the leaping ability to be the best ever. I just think with Rice's longevity no one will touch his records.

i cant believe he put a guy who admits to taking plays off as the number 2 wr of all time over
chris carter
tim brown
steve largent
marvin harrison
moss is a top 6/7 WR, when his career is over maybe he will be close to carter and brown, but no where neer it now
