LOS ANGELES (Reuters) - St. Louis Rams owner Georgia Frontiere, a former nightclub entertainer who became one of the few women to own a major U.S. sports franchise when she inherited the National Football League team from her husband, died on Friday.
Frontiere, 80, who drew the ire of Los Angeles sports fans when she moved the Rams from Southern California to her hometown of St. Louis in 1995, had been hospitalized for several months with breast cancer. She died at UCLA Medical Center in Los Angeles on Friday afternoon, the team said in a statement.
Frontiere's family intends to retain ownership of the Rams, with her son Dale "Chip" Rosenbloom and daughter Lucia Rodriguez holding a 60 percent stake in the franchise, the Los Angeles Times reported.
Frontiere's children said in a statement that she was "a beautiful person who led an extraordinary life."
"Our mom was dedicated to being more than the owner of a football team," Rodriguez and Rosenbloom said in the statement. "She loved the Rams' players, coaches and staff. The warmth and generosity she exuded will never be forgotten."
Frontiere was a singer and dancer from a middle-class St. Louis family who had been married five times when she met Rams owner Carroll Rosenbloom in the 1950s. She inherited the NFL team from him in 1979, when he died at age 72 while swimming in the Atlantic Ocean.
Her decision to move the Rams from California to St. Louis infuriated sports fans in Los Angeles and was considered a risky financial move but it won hearts in St. Louis and the team proved successful there.
Thanks to Josdin for the awesome sig!

Harsh enough for ya?
The team was suppose to be controlled by his son (his wishes), but was left to her in his will for tax purposes.
Well, the harsh coont kicks his son off the board and moves the team to her home town of St. Louis.
