Professional football has gone into hibernation.
Excluding the hybrid Arena version of the sport, there are no notable spring leagues in operation for the first time since 1994. Even the NFL has pulled the plug on its own venture by discontinuing NFL Europa.
Even at age 84, Dave Dixon still dreams of starting a spring football league.
Dixon, though, realizes no current undertaking can generate the same splash as the one he made 25 years ago when forming the United States Football League.
"It really kind of broke my heart that the USFL did not make it," Dixon told FOXSports.com this week in a telephone interview. "It should have."
Thanks to Josdin for the awesome sig!
