PHOENIX -- Team chairman Dan Rooney said the Steelers will "probably" make a decision next week about whether to install artificial turf at Heinz Field....
Re: Rooney stands by Heinz Field - Upshaw wants field turf
Field turf should not be used outside.
Football players are suppose to be dirty
Re: Rooney stands by Heinz Field - Upshaw wants field turf
The Packers have a combination of both, maybe that would be a good compramise.

Football players are also supposed to play on solid ground, not a swamp...

Why not roof every stadium and install turf.
They could change the leagues name to AFL.

Why not plow every field and play in the mud?
You could call it mud wrestling.

I kindof like to take the "Old School" tract most of the time and want to see a game outdoors on natural grass but we have seen at least 2 reasons (Possibly 3) that were just terrible games to watch.
With that said, I kindof like the new turf.
Doesn't seem to be as dangerous as the old stuff.

Grass is safest.
Biggest problem for Heinz was, I believe, playing other games there.
I think Pitt plays there, and I believe they also had HS finals there, but I could be wrong.
In the winter, that kind of use calls for something stronger than pure grass, or you'll end up with a torn up field.
Lambeau held up very well, I thought, during the snow game in the playoffs.
I don't think it's used for anything but the Packers.

Yeah the problem with Heinz field was the amount of games being played on the surface. The Steelers and Pitt Panthers both play their home games there, and they have several high school games on the field every year as well. That's a lot of wear and tear for a grass field, especially by December.
The problem with the Dolphins game this year was that four high school games and a Panthers game were played on the field the weekend before the Steelers played. So they tried to re-sod it and it got drenched with rain and it turned to mush.

And there is the rub.
That field was more dangerous than turf and a heck of alot less interesting.
