    Ricky staying in Canuck?

    POSTED 12:05 p.m. EST; UPDATED 1:01 p.m. EST, November 7, 2006

    RICKY MIGHT STAY IN CANADA

Harvey Fialkov of the South Florida Sun-Sentinel says that running back Ricky Williams hasn't decided whether to apply for reinstatement to the NFL, and that he might play next season in Canada.

    Our take?
Given Williams' history, we cannot rule out the possibility that Williams knows that he would not achieve reinstatement if/when he applies for it.
Per NFL rules, a player banished for at least one year due to multiple violations of the substance abuse policy must continue to adhere to the terms of his treatment plan -- and he also must continue to submit to random drug testing.

Former Vikings running back Onterrio Smith, for example, was denied reinstatement earlier this year, following his one-year banishment.
Smith was eligible to re-apply in October, but after getting cut in the preseason from a CFL team Smith might have chosen a certain ability to continue to smoke weed over a very uncertain ability to continue to play football.

If, in this case, Williams knows that the NFL will say "no" when May comes around, why not make it simply look like Ricky is the one making the decision to walk away?

And since the entire process is confidential, there would be no reason for even the Dolphins to know that Ricky has been unable to qualify for reinstatement, if he never actually applies for reinstatement.

Or maybe he really just is a total whack job who prefers playing in a league that pays him far less money, on a team with little or no run blocking.

Dolphins | R. Williams will return to team in 2007
    Tue, 7 Nov 2006 18:25:39 -0800

Harvey Fialkov, of the Sun-Sentinel, reports CFL RB Ricky Williams will honor his agreement with the Miami Dolphins and return to the team in 2007. "Ricky promised the Dolphins that he'd return and the whole project of him signing with the Argonauts was predicated on him being released at the end of the year. Ricky is having a wonderful time in Canada; it's a less intrusive brand of football, but his status hasn't changed," said Williams' agent Leigh Steinberg. He said that Williams would be unable to return to the Argonauts next year because the two leagues run concurrently.

I don't blame him for wanting to stay in Canada, it's an awesome country...though I'm not sure why he wants to stay in Toronto.

ricky is having fun up here in canada. sure he broke his arm, and i dont think he is a big fan of the media (check his interviews from last week) but otherwise its a nice fit. he is the featured guy, and there is less pressure than in the nfl to preform. and he is two wins away from a championship.

Ricky is the second best back on the Toronto team and a distant second. My team, Winnipeg, though blowing a game they had in hand, had little trouble containing Williams last week. When Onterio came to try out for Winnipeg he was out of shape. He work himself into decent shape but got injured in the first exhibition game and couldn't play or compete for a position. He had to be cut.
