WE TOOK: Robert Smith, RB Ohio State (in this re-do, Smith went #4 overall)
WE SHOULD HAVE TAKEN: LB Greg Biekert, Colorado
The Vikings had an amazing nucleus with Rich Gannon at quarterback, Terry Allen and an aging Roger Craig at running back and Cris Carter, Jake Reed and Anthony Carter at receiver. The defense needed some work and Biekert would be a great fill in for ten years.

Not believing in Jim McMahon or Sean Salisbury, the Vikings should've taken Dilfer here and hope they'd get the Baltimore/Seattle version.

WE SHOULD HAVE TAKEN: C Kevin Mawae, LSU
The Vikings were putting together a great offensive line and after not getting Steussie, they could've used the steady pro Mawae who'd be a Pro Bowl performer more than a decade later.

WE SHOULD HAVE TAKEN: WR Joey Galloway (1st), Ohio State
Minnesota passed on Warren Sapp because of drug rumors ... OOOOOOOOOPPS. Had the Vikings taken Sapp, they would've gone to at least two Super Bowls. Forget defense. Imagine the eventual possibilities the Vikings would have with Galloway and Cris Carter (and eventually Randy Moss).

The Vikings were in the midst of putting together one of the league's best offensive lines. On the field, they'll take the great years Stringer gave them, tragedy and all.

With John Randle eating up most of the attention on the Viking defensive line, Glover would've racked up even more than the 71.5 sacks he had by 2004.

WE SHOULD HAVE TAKEN: CB Shawn Springs, Ohio State
Was Rudd not good enough or could Dennis Green and his staff not handle talent on defense? Shawn Springs might have been a huge disappointment considering he was taken at the three, but he would've given the struggling Viking D a few good years.

WE SHOULD HAVE TAKEN: CB Dre Bly, North Carolina
Many experts fired on the Vikings for taking Culpepper instead of a much needed defensive player. Many experts are pinheads. Yeah, the Viking brain trust blew any chance of looking smart by taking Dimitrius Underwood later, but Culpepper has turned out to be a franchise quarterback. Always needing defense, Bly wouldn't have been a bad pick.

WE TOOK: Dimitrius Underwood, DE Michigan State
WE SHOULD HAVE TAKEN: DE Mike Rucker, Nebraska
Underwood might go down as one of the league's all-time busts and a tribute to the lack of homework the Viking front office did. Rucker became a decent pass rusher for the Panthers.

WE TOOK: Chris Hovan, DT Boston College
WE SHOULD HAVE TAKEN: RB Mike Anderson, Utah
Hovan hasn't been all that bad, but Anderson would've been a power runner the Vikings could've plugged in for several years.

WE SHOULD HAVE TAKEN: DT Marcus Stroud, Georgia
With no great defensive backs available, Robinson would be a solid pick when he wasn't being a flake. O.K., so the combination of Randy Moss and Robinson would be a nightmare.

WE SHOULD HAVE TAKEN: DE Charles Grant, Georgia
McKinnie isn't a bad selection, but Minnesota has needed defense and Grant would've been the star of the Viking D line.

WE TOOK: Kevin Williams, DE Oklahoma State (in this re-do, Williams went #3 overall)
WE SHOULD HAVE TAKEN: LB Terrell Suggs, Arizona State
It took the Vikings too long to get the pick in, but it worked out well getting the Pro Bowl tackle it wanted. Needing defense, Suggs would be the best player left on the board.
