    Re: Ravens in Cap Hell

The operative word is projected. This means they need to restructure or cut some vets. They will get it done. As usually or GM CAP GOD will be waiting to play Deal or No Deal for a few vets.

    Re: Ravens in Cap Hell

OK I looked to find the answer as I wondered if the cap is like in the NBA or MLB where the team pays a portion of the $over the cap in the form of a luxury tax (only the Yanks paid last year)

here is the Q and A from http://www.askthecommish.com/salarycap/faq.asp
the page also talks about how bonuses and such affect the cap... no wonder most teams have a couple people figuring this out.

So...what happens if a team goes over the Salary Cap?

"Answer: The short answer is simply that NO team CAN go over the Salary Cap. Note that every contract must go through the NFL League Office before the deal can be made official. Presumably, one of the things the league must do at this time is determine whether or not the contract would violate the NFL's Salary Cap. If the deal does violate the cap, then the NFL will reject it.

There have been instances in which a team has managed to sneak a cap evading contract by the league. Upon further review, the violations were caught by the league and the respective teams were penalized. Penalties include fines and/or forfeiture of draft picks. In recent history both the Pittsburgh Steelers and San Francisco 49ers have been penalized draft picks, while the 49ers' front office personnel (Carmen Policy and Dwight Clark) were also fined."

so it seems like there isn't a set penalty

Titans | Arbitrator issues McNair ruling
    Wed, 31 May 2006 12:43:15 -0700

The Associated Press an arbitrator ruled Wednesday, May 31, that the Tennessee Titans cannot keep QB Steve McNair from working out on their property as long as he has a contract with the team. General Counsel Richard Berthelsen called it a victory for the NFL Players Association and McNair. McNair is under contract for the 2006 season and due a salary of $9 million.

According to Florio McNair is going to the Ravens:

...As a result, the stare down between the Titans and Ravens will continue. It's a foregone conclusion that McNair will sign with the Ravens once he's cut by the Titans. At this point, with only a few weeks remaining in the offseason program, it makes no sense for Baltimore to send a draft pick to Tennessee. Come July, when the cap-strapped Titans need to clear up space in order to sign draft picks, McNair will get the heave-ho, and the Ravens will be able to sign the 2003 MVP without giving anything to the Titans for his rights.

Problem is he mentions the cap-strapped Titans, but he Ravens are strapped to.

it is a hard cap and nobody can go over it..... the problem is that certain types of bonuses don't count towards the cap and there are many creative ways to make the hard number smaller.

    Thanks Lotza!
