    1. Shawne Merriman, San Diego Chargers.
Merriman is the ultimate playmaking linebacker in the modern NFL. A top pass rusher, he is also strong against the run and plays with unmatched intensity. Although some will point to his struggles with the NFL substance-abuse policy, there still seems little doubt he's the league's most talented at the position.

Merriman!? Last I checked linebackers that are good against the run make more than 60 tackles a year.

Shawne Merriman is vastly overated! He probably is the best pass rushing linebacker in the NFL, but overall he shouldn't even be in the top 5 if you ask me. There's defenitely a lot of bad rankings on this list.

I see AJ Hawk is still being rewarded for his college success... not really sure what he's done to warrant a ranking here and EJ didn't... but whatever.

E.J. Henderson would have made MY top 25 list.
He would even have made my top 10 list.

Can't believe E.J. is still that underated. He have had two back-to-back pro bowl seasons now and he's still underated.

People would rather hear a name they know and not think about it, rather than delve into the numbers (or watch film) and actually observe the player.

I know for SURE that as it stands today, EJ Henderson is much better than AJ Hawk. I'd say Hawk is as good as Greenway. They both had 78 solo tackles last season and 27 tackle assists, except Hawk only had one interception and zero TDs... Greenway had two interceptions and one TD...

Again, no research went into this article. It's about "Names".

Re: Ranking the top 25 NFL linebackers

I'll take EJ Henderson over Brian Urlacher. Granted Urlacher is a good player he gets ran over too much, he's not near the player EJ is at the point of attack. EJ also has very good sideline to sideline speed even though he ran a 4.8 in his forty. Deceptive speed and a killer instinct makes EJ a rock at MLB.

The fact that EJ isn't on this list goes to show the stupidity or Sporting News. Patrick Willis and EJ Henderson belong in the top 10 easy. I don't know that there is a more physical LB than EJ, he has left players on the field injured countless times. His hits are literally bone crushing.

Re: Ranking the top 25 NFL linebackers

Merriman is not the best LB in the NFL, he's simply a good pass rusher.
I would take Demarcus Ware over Merriman anyway (for what they do).
Merriman wasn't so great when he was getting undressed by AD last year.

What a bad list, there are a lot of good LBs (EJ Henderson, Kirk Morrison, Antonio Pierce etc.) aren't there.
Guys like Tatupu, Willis, Demeco Ryans are too low.
Players like Adalius Thomas, Merriman, Peterson, Suggs etc. are all too high.
And players like Bart Scott, Mike Vrabel, Mike Boley, AJ Hawk etc. shouldn't even be there.

I m like a Ja Rule poster, cause I'm off the wall.
