The St. Louis Rams completed their coaching staff Tuesday with the hiring of defensive line coach Brian Baker from the Minnesota Vikings.

Baker enters his 11th NFL season in 2006, having spent the past five years as the Vikings' defensive line coach and in similar roles with the Lions and the Chargers.

Baker replaces Bill Kollar, who left for a job with the Buffalo Bills after Scott Linehan, himself a former Vikings assistant, took over last month as the Rams' head coach.

Briefly: The New York Jets designated defensive end John Abraham their franchise player, as expected. The three-time Pro Bowl selection will earn $8.33 million in 2006 if he stays with the Jets, but the team is so far over the salary cap, it is expected to explore the option of trading him.

• Seven-time Pro Bowl safety John Lynch signed a two-year contract extension that will keep him with the Denver Broncos through the 2008 season. Lynch, who joined the Broncos in 2004 from Tampa Bay, is entering his 14th season in the NFL and third with Denver. He is 34.

• The Green Bay Packers have sent eight players to NFL Europe: safety Atari Bigby, wide receiver Vince Butler, cornerback Therrian Fontenot, tight end Tory Humphrey, wide receiver Chad Lucas, defensive tackle Jerome Nichols, guard Pete Traynor and quarterback Brian Wrobel.

• The Cincinnati Bengals re-signed punter Kyle Larson to a one-year contract.

• The Buffalo Bills hired Matt Sheldon as linebackers coach.
