The first question that comes to my mind, but apparently not to the mind of some fans, is 'why were they released?'.
    ???
The second question is 'why would the Vikings need this player?'.

    ???

you do realize that lance johnstone would instantly be our best DE again if he rejoined the team right?

??? Did they let you out of hell already, did you pick another lock or did you acquire one of these?

To answer your question, he was an UFA after the 2005 season. Childress didn't elect to resign him, so he signed a deal with the Raiders.

He was great the way Tice used him in a limited role. Mostly on 3rd down plays only & the guy still amassed 11 sacks in 2004 & 7.5 in 2005.

That's more sacks than a hell of a lot of full time starting DE's get.

Johnstone would not be our best DE, because he is getting up there in years & would only get used on a limited basis if he were here, IMO. It is what you use as a determining factor that constitutes what "best" means to you & everyone else.

He is no longer starting material & therefore would not be our best DE "instantly" by virtue of just being on the roster.

Like everyone else on the team, performance speaks volumes & until he has played here again & proven himself the best, then everything else is pure speculation & conjecture.

    Nope...we don't need him.
Edwards is our new pass rush specialist...we just need to turn him loose!
