Oakland Raiders head coach Tom Cable isn't talking about reports he punched defensive assistant Randy Hanson in the jaw and caused injuries that required treatment at a hospital earlier this month.

However, multiple sources have told the NFL Network that it was Cable who threw the punch. A report on AOL Fanhouse.com also named Cable as the assailant, citing two NFL sources.

Oakland Raiders Coach Tom Cable has denied a report that he hit one of his team's defensive assistants in the jaw during a meeting, resulting in an injury that required treatment at a Napa, Calif., hospital emergency room earlier this month.

Cable told ESPN that no punches were thrown.

Several news organizations reported Monday that Raiders defensive assistant Randy Hanson was treated at a hospital following the Aug. 5 incident and reportedly told police that the injury had been caused by another member of the team's coaching staff. A report by the Web site FanHouse indicated that Cable had punched Hanson.

Cable declined to comment during a news conference Monday, calling it an "internal" issue, but made his denial to ESPN.

Former NFL scout Daniel Jeremiah wrote on his Twitter account that "no punches were thrown" but "Cable flipped Hanson's chair and Hanson hit his face on a cabinet."

Jeremiah, writing that his information came from "a very reliable source," indicated that the incident occurred when Raiders defensive coordinator John Marshall and Hanson "were in a heated discussion and Hanson got pretty nasty. Cable took exception and went off on Hanson."

Randy Hanson, the Raiders defensive assistant who was treated for facial injuries two weeks ago following an incident during a coaching meeting, is planning to turn over his medical records to police and has hired an attorney, John McGuinn, according to a source with knowledge of the situation.

No charges have been filed, and police aren’t proceeding with the case. However, Hanson has six months from the date of the incident to report a misdemeanor assault, and if he suffered a broken jaw as a result of any altercation, then police said it would be deemed a felony assault, meaning he would have a year to press charges.


NFL commissioner Roger Goodell has taken a firm stance in terms of player conduct — and league employee conduct overall — so many around the league will watch closely to see what if any discipline is involved, pending the outcome of any investigations. Suspensions and fines have been commonplace when players have been involved in physical altercations off the field.
