As I previously noted, the ESPN preseason power polls are only slightly correlated (0.27 correlation coefficient) to the actual final standings.
In contrast, the 2008 week 1 Power Poll provided on PPO was highly correlated (0.53 correlation coefficient) to the final 2008 standings.
And it only got better... by the sixth week of the season, that number is up to an astronomical 0.75.
