    The Origins of All 32 NFL Team Names

    Minnesota VikingsAccording to the Vikings’ website, Bert Rose, Minnesota’s general manager when it joined the NFL in 1961, recommended the nickname to the team’s Board of Directors because “it represented both an aggressive person with the will to win and the Nordic tradition in the northern Midwest.” The expansion franchise also became the first pro sports team to feature its home state, rather than a city, in the team name.

    I have read a similar account from Max Winter about Bert Rose.

    The Vikings name fit this area very well. It may not in 2050, but that is another matter.

    I also like that the Vikings are Minnesota Vikings rather than Minneapolis Vikings. At one time, that made us unique in the NFL.
