That sucks, because NFL network shows just parts of each game.
I think you were misinformed or overreacting.
As far as I've heard, nothing was ever announced that DirecTV would be broadcasting NFL preseason games any differently than has been done before. DirecTV is a satellite service provider, not a broadcast network. Therefore, DirecTV doesn't show any NFL games...only the channels that they carry will be showing games. This means that on DirecTV we can see all the preseason games carried live on:
FOX
CBS
NBC
ESPN
NFL Network
NFL Network will only carry the games not covered live by those other networks (as far as I know), and most of those that NFL Network does broadcast will be on a tape-delayed basis. I do believe that they will carry a few live preseason games in their entirety though, as they will begin to broadcast a few live NFL games starting on Thanksgiving. On the nights that the NFL has many preseason games going at the same time (Friday and Saturday nights, usually), NFL Network will continue broadcasting live snippets from around the league.
I am still glad that, tape delayed or not, I'll have the opportunity to watch all four Vikings preseason games in their entirety.
Yeah, the first game is on ESPN.
