New Orleans coach Sean Payton was part of the wheeling and dealing in the first round of the draft on Saturday.
As advertised, the first round of the 2008 NFL Draft turned into a trader’s paradise.
Nine trades were made in the first round of the draft, including one by the Chiefs, who moved up two spots from 17th to 15th in a trade with Detroit and selected offensive lineman Branden Albert of Virginia.

If I had to give the Lions a grade for day one of the NFL Draft, I'd say it's around a C.
The Gosder Cherilus pick is a B for me.
It's not all on the Lions for it not being higher as what happened in front of them just went completely wrong, but I do think Detroit could have made a better effort to trade down one more time before settling on Cherilus.
The Dizon pick, on the other hand, is more around a D in my mind.
I've got nothing against Dizon, but there was no need to draft him that early, especially when the running backs were going off the board so quickly.

Heading into the draft there were many in the league, because of the variety of opinions about the draft board as well as a more pervasive "win-now' feeling around the NFL, that more teams than ever were going to draft for need.

NEW YORK -- Franchises spend millions in scouting, and the first two rounds of the draft are critical to their success or failure. When you designate draft losers, you are really pointing to teams for which things didn't go exactly right. It could be a trade that falls through or one that doesn't net the desired results.

The winners are evident. They get breaks. The right player falls in the right place.

The 'city that never sleeps' can finally take a nap. Day one of the 2008 NFL Draft has come and gone.
In
record-setting fashion, at that.
The top ten picks unfolded with relative ease, although Jacksonville surprised many by trading up into the top ten, taking Baltimore's slot at eight.
As the day wore on, running backs and offensive linemen seemed to rule the draft.
No wide receivers were chosen in the first round for the first time since 1990.
The first round only produced two quarterbacks as well.
The new draft format was probably the biggest success story of the day.
With a faster, more fluid pace to the first two rounds, teams, players, and even fans all benefited.
The new format should also allow for a more exciting second day as well, with the third round included this year.

He he he he.1. Detroit Lions:
D-
Not only did the Lions fail to upgrade their second-worst running game by taking a running back (Mendenhall and Jones were still on the board), but they reached for Gosder Cherilus when Pittsburgh's Jeff Otah was still available.
I love the Lions.
