NFL proposes penalizing players who spike the ball

    KFFL
NFL | Committee will propose penalizing players who spike the ball
    Sat, 24 Mar 2007 09:30:23 -0700

Chris Pika, of AtlantaFalcons.com, reports the NFL's Competition Committee will propose penalizing players who spike or throw the ball after plays on the field. Touchdowns will not be subject to the proposed five-yard penalty. " This is an issue that has really shown itself in the last two years where it seems like every play -- whether a three-yard gain or a 15-yarder -- results in a player stepping up and spiking the ball," Atlanta Falcons general manager and committee co-chairman Rich McKay said. If a player spiked the ball after gaining a first down, the ball would be moved back five yards but it will still be first-and-10.

Seems kind of strange, a penalty with little bite.

Eh....I don't like it. What if it was a 70 yard bomb from your own 20. Are you telling me you can't spike the ball to celebrate the magnificient hookup just because it wasn't a touchdown?
Because I'm a Vikings fan, they are that much sexier.

I thought that this would pertain to touchdowns, but it doesn't, so I'm all for it. Why should the officials have to chase footballs around unnecessarily?

    I'm all for this.
They can still spike it after a TD, but not during actual game play.
I don't remember the play, but in the Pats game, a Patriot threw the ball into the endzone after he caught it for a first down.
It was stupid, and wasted time.

    Yes.
    Can't you read?

But, let me humor you; how is "magnificent" defined?

A TD celebration doesn't impede the game, is a well-defined event, and is an acceptable cause for celebration.
A 70 yd gain might eventually result in a missed FG, blocked FG, fumble and loss of scoring opportunity.
If it DOES result in a TD, the players could consider the spike done on the TD to include a coincident celebration of the recent 70 yd pass play.

When we stop to think about it, most folks behavior isn't perplexing after all !
