NFL Draft round one shortened - could be moved to Friday Night

    http://www.profootballtalk.com/rumormill.htm
ROUND ONE EXPECTED TO BE CUT TO 10 MINUTES

Lost in the news from Monday regarding NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell's musings about a Super Bowl being played on foreign soil is the revelation that the time limit for the first round of the 2008 draft will likely be reduced from 15 minutes to 10 minutes, as soon as next week.

The other half of this looming development is that round one will be moved into prime time on Friday night, where the ad revenues (and rights fees) would be much higher.

We've previously suggested that only the first half of round one be moved to Friday night, since movement of the entire first round will create some of the timing issues that plague Monday night football.

How late to start is too late to finish on the right side of the Mississippi?
How early to start is too early in California?

Even with only 10 minutes, the first round could take up to five hours and twenty minutes.

So start at 9:00 p.m. EDT on Friday with the first half of round one, which would take, at most, three hours and a little change.
And then pick it up with pick 17 the next day at noon in New York.
    I am all for this.
The NFL draft is already a pretty big television event.
And this would put it into prime time.
Plus it would make the draft party a lot of fun too.

Sounds good, 15 minutes is way too long

From a Die hard draftnick, I am not so sure I like this.
I for one like to spend the day cooking wings, eating bean dip/salsa and chicks and swilling beer all day long Saturday followed by a recoup day on Sunday.

I guess I could modify my sched a bit but just seems a bit strange drinking into the wee hours of the morning.

I quit doing that when I grew up.

Re: NFL Draft round one shortened - could be moved to Friday Night

My first thought was concern for the draft parties if they split up the first round.
What happens if a team has a first round pick on the second day?
Do they only host their draft party on Saturday?
Or do they host both Friday night and Saturday in the event that the team trades up?

My guess is that they host on both days.
Hell, if this happens, and the Vikings have a Saturday first round pick, then the wife and I would come down Friday, go to the party, stay at a hotel and go again on Saturday (if needed).
    That wouldn't be so bad...

Good! I am glad this was changed. It's nice to know that the NFL is listening to its audience.

It's a good move they have made.

I'm also glad that they didn't move the first round to friday, I hope they never do that.

Thanks to PPE for the sig.

The NFL announced several changes to its draft process during a league meeting in Philadelphia but it will not be moving to Friday night just yet. (The 2008 draft will be conducted on Saturday and Sunday, April 26-27 at Radio City Music Hall in New York City and televised by NFL Network and ESPN)....
