NFL Referees are the best in all of sports, IMHO. Watching 22 tremendously fast and athletic men push and shove and fight during and being able to control it is rather difficult. Plus they have to be fit enough to run up and down the field - no Bruce Froemming fatties here like in baseball.

So, to counter you, I do not think they "suck".

    Didja watch the Super Bowl?
Every second of it. So what? To say that the referees decided that game more than Jerramy Stevens dropping passes is ludicrous.

Interesting article concerning the refereeing in the Super Bowl here:

Zeus, I want some of what you have been smoking. I agree that they have one of the toughest professional sports to officiate, but the quality of officiating leaves quite a bit to be desired. The biggest reason: part time officials. If the NFL would take a clue from other pro sports, they would pay their refs enough to make it a full time gig, with year round training.
I absolutely agree that the NFL refs should be full-time employees.

But we're not talking about the future - we're talking about right now. And I happen to think being an NFL ref is the toughest of ALL big-time sports officiating jobs. And I think the NFL refs get it right 99.99% of the time. The problem is that when they don't get one right (see: Matt Hassleback's phantom "block below the waist" from the Super Bowl) the call is shown over and over and over and over and over and over again.

How often does ESPN or NBC or CBS or ABC show the ref making the correct holding call over and over and over and over and over again?

    The NFL doesn't need refs...

    Let the players referee themselves!

It'll save the NFL a bundle on refs salaries, and the games would be very entertaining!

    Thanks PPE for the sig.

I'm surprised that hasn't happened yet. Looks like a job for the new commish.
The concept has been bounced around for years. Unfortunately, many of these guys make big $$$ in their real lives and would be loathe to give that up for 7 months of working.

    "Are full-time officials needed?

Well, that argument has never made sense because too many experienced officials would never quit their Monday through Friday jobs to simply work 20 games a year. Plus, the majority of owners have never believed full-time officials made fiscal sense or would actually improve their game-day performances. Besides, what would you do with these guys between February and July?"

Cheerleaders. That's the answer. There are always more cheerleading prospects than positions. Put scantily clad women in there to officiate the game. That's it, I'm putting my name in the hat for the commish position.

Can you imagine it? That little replay booth thingey would be only 2 feet above the ground so they'd have to bend over to look into it!

No doubt. We must come up with a protocol outfit. Here are a few for starters:

I think those new uniforms suck. I like the old ones better.
