The guy went 14-2 in the AFC and he gets canned.
    That's absolutely rediculous.
Any chance we can fire the Chiller and pick him up? Demote Frazier and make Marty our DC? Then we can promote him to HC next year!
Yeah thats what we want to do.
Change our head coach every year.
That's a great way to build a winning team.

the guy has never won the big game. last year the chargers were widely regarded at the best team in football and he couldn't even get them to the afc championship.
I am so sick of this can't win the game trash.
Peyton Manning and Tony Dungy weren't great because they couldn't win the big game, dang, they just won the Super Bowl.
Andy Reid and McNabb couldn't win a big game either, oh yea, they made it to the Super Bowl.
If a coach takes a team 14-2, he deserves respect given the day and age of the game.
It's all about the big game homeboy.

Marty has been at it wwwwaaaayyyy more than any of the other guys you mentioned.
Hell, Manning and McNabb were little kids when Marty was stinking it up in Cleveland.

    Ever heard of Dennis Green?
I'm just making the point that these people that weren't supposed to be able to win the big game, have.

How about Bill Cowher. He was supposed to be another guy who couldn't win the big one. Marty took the worst team in the NFL and made it one of the best. He deserved at least one more year to try to take the best offense (IMO) in the NFL to the super bowl.

I like Marty.. He is a good coach that knows how to win games.. He was in a losing situation as it was.. He lost Cam Cameron, and Wade Phillips in a matter of weeks.. He would have had to start over with a different DC, and OC..

I am also guessing this decision has something to do with him not accepting that contract extension at the end of the year.. The owner probably figured that by him refusing the offer, that he was going to walk anyways at seasons end..

It was probably best that he got let go now so they can get their long term option in place before the draft.. If the rumors come to life, Pete Carrol would be a great choice to be the next head coach of the Chargers..

It will be interesting to see if Rivera gets interviwed(which I think he will), and get passed over for another HC job

    Its hard to say.
Other coaches that have had great winning records have been let go simply because of friction with the owner.
Two that come to mind are Tony Dungy and the Buc's and Jimmy Johnson and the Cowboys.

Didn't the OC and DC both get hired away too?
Seems like a convenient time to bring in a new HC and let them do their thing regarding building up a coaching team.
I haven't read any articles on this, but I wonder how the core leaders on the team are regarding their opinion on the topic?

Personally, I think they should hire him at Winter Park as a night janitor.
He would be interesting to talk to for the people that are working late.

Chargers | Team releases statement over Schottenheimer's dismissal
    Mon, 12 Feb 2007 18:28:22 -0800

San Diego Chargers president Dean Spanos has released a statement regarding head coach Marty Schottenheimer's dismissal. Spanos said, " Today I made an extremely difficult decision: Marty Schottenheimer is no longer the head coach of the San Diego Chargers." Spanos said the team is responsible for paying the final year of Schottenheimer's contract. He added, "Our fans deserve to know what changed for me over the last month. When I decided to move ahead with Marty Schottenheimer in mid-January, I did so with the expectation that the core of his fine coaching staff would remain intact. Unfortunately, that did not prove to be the case, and the process of dealing with these coaching changes convinced me that we simply could not move forward with such dysfunction between our head coach and general manager. In short, this entire process over the last month convinced me beyond any doubt that I had to act to change this untenable situation and create an environment where everyone at Charger Park would be pulling in the same direction and working at a championship level. I expect exactly that from our entire Charger organization in 2007."
