Manning to Restructure Deal to Add Cap Room
Colts Will Save Nearly $8 Million on Move
By MICHAEL MAROT
AP
INDIANAPOLIS (Feb. 21) - Peyton Manning
has agreed to restructure his contract with the Indianapolis Colts
to save the team nearly $8 million in salary cap space.

The Super Bowl MVP was to receive a $10 million roster bonus during the offseason but by converting the money into a regular signing bonus, the Colts can prorate that amount over the remaining four years of his deal. That saves Indianapolis space under the cap, which is $109 million.
Somehow, I just don't see a player like Daunte doing that.

=Z=

Thanks to Josdin for the awesome sig!

That right there is a class act, team first type of player.. To bad that there is not more players like Peyton Manning in the NFL.. He just won a SB Title, and here he is redoing his contract so they can keep their star players, or sign others that will possibly help them with another one next year..

Agreed. Don't see much of these type of players nowadays.

Good to see a pro athlete not being a money whore.
Now he'll just do more commercials to make up for the lost money.

I don't know if he's actually losing money, just deffering it (not that he really needs it).

I don't think he'll lose money unless they terminate his contract (VERY unlikely) or he restructures for a longer deal.

Even though he most likely won't lose money, it is still a classy move by Manning. He's passing up the "now" money to help the team, and there aren't many superstars that would do that!

I guess the only way he is losing money is by not taking that bonus and putting it in stocks and making interest off it and stuff, but I don't think that is going to hurt his pocketbook too much!

Re: Manning to Restructure Deal to Add Cap Room

Forgive me, if I don't go all Madden-over-Favre on this puff piece.
This effects Manning in NO WAY at all.
Its all salary cap jargon and how it is recognized within a given year.
The proration of the "signing bonus" is merely how its recognized on the books.
A roster bonus is a one time payment that hits the cap immediately.
A signing bonus is a one time payment that can be prorated FOR CAP PURPOSES over the life of the contract.
Manning still gets paid his $10M bonus, now, plus his anual salary.
The colts added $2.5M to their cap numbers for the next 4 years.

If Manning was such a "team" oriented guy, he never would have taken that huge contract in 2004.
He also would have restructured his contract so they could have kept Edge.
In 2004 when Peyton raked his team over the coals for that $99M contract, he was taking up a HUGE portion of the salary cap.
Remember when it was time for Tom Brady to redo his rookie contract?
He certainly didn't take "team" contract like Peyton.

Its kind of a coincidence that the Colts win the SuperBowl in the year that Salary cap jumps $17M, don't ya think??

Very true about the prorated restructuring.
However, you have to be realistic about Peyton's 99 mil contract.
He is the greatest QB of this generation, and deserves every penny he gets.
Every player wants to get the most money out of the NFL they can, and Manning is no exception.
Plus, did they really need Edge anyways?

Chuch.
