Longwell in purple leaves fan seeing red

    Posted March 19, 2006

On kicker Ryan Longwell signing with Minnesota

Shari Blohm, Neenah: "ARRRRGGGHHHH — I am in physical pain! I cannot believe that Ted Thompson did not get him signed and now he's a VIKING! A VIKING! Ryan Longwell was my favorite Packers player and I have worn his jersey proudly for two years (prior to that, I was a huge Darren Sharper fan and wore his jersey — I think I need to be careful whose jersey I choose next as they could be wearing purple in a year or two).

Tears welled up in my eyes as I read that not only are we losing Ryan, but he's going to be wearing Viking purple. Now I have to root for him to lose and watch him play in a purple uniform twice a year against the Packers. That was a sad, sad day and I will have a hard time forgiving Thompson for this atrocity."

On Javon Walker's comments that he doesn't want to play for the Packers

Matt Wessing, Appleton: "Let him sit and rot just like last year."

Tyler Kabat, Appleton: "If Brett Favre stays, we need Walker or this year will be the same as last year. Keep him and, if he does well, sign him to a long-term deal."

On Favre's future with the Packers

Chris Brouch, Appleton: "We'll certainly be better than 4-12 if we have Favre for one more year. The only drawback is if Favre only plays one more year. The team won't be ready to really compete until 2007. So if Favre plays in 2006 and then retires, it puts the team's rebuilding back another year. He really needs to commit to two more years for himself and the team. What's weighing more and more on his mind is his family, being so far away from him during most of the season."

Dennis Nagan, Appleton: "My vote is he'll be back. What (coach Mike) McCarthy said — and (former Packers coaches) Ray Rhodes and (Mike) Sherman never did this — is he said, 'This is a team game.' Favre has to play a team game."

Kabat: "(Former Packers coach Mike) Holmgren was tough on Favre. That's what we need from McCarthy. Favre's not coming back if it looks like a rebuilding team."

Wessing: "Favre wants to see how the Packers spend all their money."

    On McCarthy and his staff

Wessing: "It's a big risk. Thompson will make or break his GM job on McCarthy."

Kabat: "I'm excited, but skeptical because the staff is unproven."

On the Packers' prospects for 2006

Doug Hahn, Appleton: "We'll take the first step in the rebuilding process, 6-10 or 7-9. With a new coaching staff, it's going to take some time to get up to speed. I don't mind if it's 6-10, as long as we're building and moving up."

Brouch: "With Favre, 8-8. Without him, 6-10."

Nagan: "It's a weak division, so 9-7. I love the coaching staff. Thompson's playing it smart. He has money and he'll go out and get some great draft choices and spend wisely."

Wessing: "With Favre, playoffs. Without him, 7-9 at best."

Kabat: "With Favre and Walker, 10-6. With no Favre, 7-9 or they could reach 8-8 if Ahman Green has a good year."

How long will the Packers hang on the the glory days of the past and still think Favre is the answer to all their prayers? Stupid sheep lovers!

I've been reading the posts of the pack since right after we got Longwell, and knew they were pissed! What took the media so long on this one? Maybe because it's good for us, and bad for the pack?

All together now :blob: <-----follow the bouncing whatever it is.

I had a friend was a big baseball player
    Back in high school
He could throw that speedball by you
Make you look like a fool boy
Saw him the other night at this roadside bar
I was walking in, he was walking out
We went back inside sat down had a few drinks
But all he kept talking about was

    Chorus:
Glory days well they’ll pass you by
Glory days in the wink of a young girl’s eye
    Glory days, glory days

Well there’s a girl that lives up the block
Back in school she could turn all the boy’s heads
Sometimes on a friday I’ll stop by
And have a few drinks after she put her kids to bed
Her and her husband bobby well they split up
I guess it’s two years gone by now
We just sit around talking about the old times,
She says when she feels like crying
    She starts laughing thinking about

    Chorus

My old man worked 20 years on the line
    And they let him go
Now everywhere he goes out looking for work
They just tell him that he’s too old
I was 9 nine years old and he was working at the
    Metuchen ford plant assembly line
Now he just sits on a stool down at the legion hall
But I can tell what’s on his mind

    Glory days yeah goin back
Glory days aw he ain’t never had
    Glory days, glory days

Now I think I’m going down to the well tonight
And I’m going to drink till I get my fill
And I hope when I get old I don’t sit around thinking about it
    But I probably will
Yeah, just sitting back trying to recapture
A little of the glory of, well time slips away
And leaves you with nothing mister but
    Boring stories of glory days

    Chorus (repeat twice)

It would be great but they will still probably finish ahead of the Lions.

I doubt it, with Harrington gone the Lions at least have a chance to improve.
