ENGLEWOOD, Colo. -- Broncos receiver Rod Smith broke out a pair of dark, designer shades and his two Super Bowl rings for the occasion, wearing one on each hand.

The rings were a reminder of what once was, the shades to hide the tears.

Smith stepped into a room full of family, friends and teammates Thursday and announced his NFL career was done.

He tried to tell a joke to start things off, but his usual wisecracks failed him. Instead, he pulled a tissue from his pocket and dabbed at his eyes.

Saying farewell wasn't easy.

"I gave them everything I had," Smith said as he choked up while announcing his retirement.

about time this guy packed it in. he has been around a long time, and has pretty good numbers but i do not think he is hall of fame worthy

Yeah not quite enough, not in the top 10 in any major categories, but who knows I wouldn't be surprised if he was elected in...

This is one of those guys that has played for a long time that I really don't have a opinion on.
Maybe that is a good thing.

He was a consummate professional.

He is not hall of fame worthy IMHO!

2 Rings won't get him in.

Good to see someone with enough sense to wait a while before announcing retirement. Seems like a class act to me. His numbers might have been better if he played for a team that wasn't so run happy. Still a very good NFL career.
