Lions looking to deal No. 2 pick for more picks

Lions looking to deal No. 2 pick for more picks rather than take Johnson

Tuesday, April 24, 2007By Tom Kowalski

ALLEN PARK -- Here's a question that needs to be asked: If there are four or five teams who are willing to give up a great deal in a trade, for the opportunity to draft wide receiver Calvin Johnson, why would the Detroit Lions not want him, too?

...........
the reason the Lions are eagerly willing to trade their No. 2 overall pick to another team (so that team can draft Johnson) is because one great player isn't going to turn the Lions around. They need a lot of good players and that's why Millen wants to stockpile draft picks.

I stopped reading after I saw "the reason is because", a simple grammatical error that all journalists should already know about.

But back on topic...

I seriously doubt we trade up now. There are more options at the 7th pick or trading down.

Johnson, along with Wisconsin tackle Joe Thomas, is considered one of the "safest" picks in the draft because there are so few questions about his game, both on and off the field. Johnson has great speed (4.35 in the 40-yard dash) and size (6-foot-5 and 240 pounds) and fantastic hands. He's a hard worker who is willing to go across the middle and puts himself before the team.

"....one great player isn't going to turn the {team} around..."

"..... they need a lot of good players...."

This could be applied to many teams.
Yet some Viking fans want to trade up for CJohnson at all costs, and a lesser number of fans want to trade up for Peterson.

Which team has the picks needed to move up to #2?
It seems like the 2nd pick value prohibits any team outside of the top 12 from trading up as they would have to exchange too many picks to move up to #2.
And which team wants to move up to #2?
The answers to those two questions imply very few teams could possibly help the Lions move down.
When we stop to think about it, most folks behavior isn't perplexing after all !

Whatever the Lions decide to do, Millen will get his perfect WR.
