I agree that a 4 game preseason is too long, but I think the playoffs are just fine as they are.

The one thing that really needs to change is the way rookies are paid. Making Jake Long the highest paid offensive lineman in the league (probably ever) before he even plays a snap is absurd. They should cap rookie salaries, and use that extra money to play veterans who deserve it.
    Totally agree!

Hasn't there been a lot of complaints about mediocre veterans getting overpaid as well?

The main flaw I see with that is the veterans are making money and all you'd ultimately be doing is just putting the money into the billionaire owners pockets and I'd personally rather see rookies get the money over them.
I've said time and time again this isn't the rookies fault and it isn't the vets fault.
    It's the owners fault 100%.
What is the rookie going to refuse a big contract that some owner was crazy enough to give him?
As I've said before instead of punishing rookies and what they can make why doesn't Goodell just tell the owners to fix their own dang problem and not sign a rookie if they don't want to pay that much.
So a corporation that is exempt from anti-trust laws and has an almost monpoly on pro football wants to limit what rookies can make....hmmmmmm.
I guess I just don't shed a tear for owners who want to make a couple extra million, and a bunch of "underpaid" vets who make millions of dollars more than anybody on this board.
Ok....but the team drafting him gets rights for 5 years. Otherwise it is just a mass free for all. The draft would mean nothing.

Eh ... I am kind of in the middle on the playoffs thing. I like the idea of letting a couple more teams in ... partly because it would make getting the No. 1 seed an even huger advantage as it would become the only bye.
I definitely am against the idea of an 18 game season ... just does not seem right to me.

I think the NFL is about perfect with the playoffs and such.

I would like to see rookie salaries be adjusted, since too many rookies get too large a salary and really never live up to it (Reggie Bush, among many others)

Re: Line of Scrimmage: Five Things the NFL Must Fix

I disagree with all of them except 1 and 2 (and I'm more in favor of shortening the preseason than I am in favor of substantially lengthening the season).
The NFL doesn't "need" to change the Pro Bowl at all.

    5. I don't care about the Pro Bowl, nor do I want to be forced to care.
I was (and still am) annoyed by MLB's attempt to make a big deal out of the All-Star Game.
The bottom line is that the NFL doesn't "need" to do anything about the Pro Bowl.
The highly coordinated and specialized nature of football ensures that such a game won't be anything more than a glorified playground game.

    4. So...the referees should have to quit their other jobs and rearrange their lives just so they can work ONE three-hour game ONCE A WEEK?
    Brilliant.
And what, pray tell, will they be doing with their time?
    Watching film?
How is THAT going to improve their judgment on the field?
Does staring at a film projector screen improve vision?
If it does, it's the first I'VE heard of it.
    They're referees, not coaches.
They don't HAVE to know the tendencies of players and coaches.
They just have to know the rules.
Just because they aren't watching or studying football doesn't mean they've forgotten everything about it.

Making referees work full-time won't produce any noticeable results.
The mistakes made on the field are a result of the fact that they're (gasp!) human beings.
NOBODY is infallible, and no amount of extra "study" is going to change that.

    3. I'm not even going to bother with this one.
If he's dumb enough to think that allowing a couple of extra mediocre teams into the playoffs is going to make the league more exciting, he's clearly too stupid to be reasoned with.
