Jon Gruden replaces Tony Kornheiser on MNF

Jon Gruden will be joining ESPN's "Monday Night Football" broadcasting team of Mike Tirico and Ron Jaworski this fall, replacing Tony Kornheiser.

"I am totally grateful for the MNF opportunity that I truly enjoyed the last three seasons," Kornheiser said in a statement released by ESPN. "I feel we got better each year. My fear of planes is legendary and sadly true. When I looked at the upcoming schedule it was the perfect storm that would've frequently moved me from the bus to the air. I kept looking at the schedule the past month and wanted to find a way to quietly extricate myself. If I could handpick a replacement of a football guy, I would cast a net and drag in Jon Gruden. He is the two things you most want -- smart and funny -- and has the two things I don't -- good hair and a tan. I love PTI and am looking forward to continuing to yammer and yodel with [Mike] Wilbon until the end of time."

    Thanks for the news.
Best news I've heard all off season.....I couldn't stand Tony.
Should be a nice upgrade to the cast..

I like Tony, PTI is a good show, but Gruden is definitely an upgrade. I like to have football guys in the booth not sports writers.

THANK GOD!!!.. PTI is great, he may even be a decent writer.. but listening to him on Monday Night Football was awful... he is soo annoying and offered nothing to the broadcast.. they couldn't have replaced him sooner!!!

I think he sort of conveyed the folksy aspect... meaning, he'd always play the dumb guy and Jaws would explain the intricacies.

Anyways, not a huge Kornheiser fan... but I wish they could just find someone and keep them on longer than a season.
    Disclaimer: I'm an idiot.

I disagree, he gave Theismann a couple verbal bitch-slaps intended to keep him in-line, not that they worked. Once Theismann was gone there was no need for his baby-sitter.

    YES!
What an off-season for the football consumer.

    Madden - GONE
    Kornholer - GONE

I really could not stand the guy... I'm looking forward to seeing how Chuckie does.

    Trust me, I'm a doctor.

Kornheiser was definitely the weak link in that broadcasting booth. Gruden should be a good addition.

So we have two guys in the booth, Jaws and Chucky, nicknamed after horror movies. We're going to have to get Tirico a nickname.

His first name is Mike ... same as Mike Myers ... outside of that, I don't know many others that we could tie him to.

I agree which is why i question signing Gruden up.
Isn't he planning on coaching again? If so, why use a one year stop gap for MNF?
Maybe I shouldn't be complaining since the result equates to Tony being gone.
