Jints & Jets market naming new stadium

    KFFL
Giants | Team moving to sell stadium name
    Mon, 19 Jun 2006 20:16:26 -0700

Richard Sandomir, of the New York Times, reports the New York Giants, along with the New York Jets, took a step toward marketing the naming rights to their new stadium Monday, June 19. The teams have decided on Wasserman Media Group to sell the stadium rights. Casey Wasserman, chairman of Wasserman Media Group, would not suggest a figure that would be his starting point for negotiations and said that no other deal would be a benchmark. He added, "It's two of the most important teams in the most important league in the world. This is unique, and maybe nothing like this will be done again."

So they're selling the rights to a stadium that has not been confirmed yet?

I thought that the whole thing had been scuppered after that previous Olympic bid (Bwahaha, like you had any chance against London! :wink when they couldn't even push through a stadium for that?

The new stadium for the Jets & Giants is a done-deal, the agreement was signed last September. The two teams are going to own it together and it's being built at the Meadowlands (where Giants Stadium is today).

The stadium which Michael Bloomberg (mayor of NYC) was pushing for for the Olympics would have been a Jets-only stadium built on the West Side of Manhattan which no one but Bloomberg and the unions wanted.

Why does it seem like every other team gets a new stadium while we sit in the dump?

I'm pretty sure that the Giants & Jets are paying for the stadium themselves (but I could be wrong).

And I don't think the Metrodome is a dump - for football. It just doesn't have the "modern" (read $$$$-producing) features which the Vikes need to compete. Plus - they have a TERRIBLE lease with the folks who run the place.
