Re: It's About Time -- Commish Plans To Address First-Round Windfalls

Ideally there would be no contracts and a simple formula for salary for payment based on last years results, like:

    For every catch: 5 grand
    For every TD: 20 Grand
For every game started: 7.5 grand
For every game played in but not started 5 grand

    etc.

With 10 or so million a year allotted to GMs to reward players with bonuses who performed perhaps better than indicated in the formula :P

The best scenario for the NFL in my opinion would be 1 year contracts based on where they are drafted (slots). With the ability to add a RFA
tender of any level if they refuse to resign.

Would be a neat-o system if you ask me. At least the management could get a taste of how they will perform in the NFL. And decide on how big of a contract they will offer based that first year. Or leave them as a restricted free agent. And if the team wants to let go of a first rounder who is a turd or just flat harms the team on the field they can without a cap hit

What would be the motivation in drafting then if the players you draft can just leave for a better team/contract after 1-2 years?

    RFA tender and franchise tags.

I don't think its flawless but its closer to okay than what goes down now.

Players leave in a few years anyways. Then can sit out a season and re-enter the draft if they are rookies.

Teams would usually say sign a long term contract or sit out the 2nd year. As opposed to the first. And players are too smart to sit out now days. (usually)

Ok after thinking about it, it's not a very good idea. But something needs to be done, i am outraged! 8)

I think 3 year contracts would be a good place to start.

I believe the slotting should be position-specific as well; an OT taken at say, #2 should not make more than a QB or RB at the same spot.

I don't think contract length is the problem at all. There are no guaranteed contracts, only some guaranteed money... and there lies the problem, Jamarcus Russel supposedly wants $34 million in guaranteed money, and he'll get that no matter how many seasons he plays. If he signs that contract and has a career ending injury before the end of camp he's still getting that $34 mil.

I'm not bothered at all by what these roookies make the NFL is paying a great deal of money to veterans right now what with Daniel Graham getting similar money to the Gates and Gonzales of the league despite being nowhere near as good.

IMO if you take away the money from the rookies it is just going to end up in the pockets of the billionare owners so I say keep giving it to the rookies they deserve it more then the owners.
Well, I think it is coming out of our pockets.

The rich don't take pay cuts.
    LOL!

If Wilf was making more money, he would either have more $s to bribe (jk) the MN legislature or more to put into the stadium himself.

Any way you say it, the rooks don't deserve that much.
They could pay the vets more then if we are worried about the owners putting to much in their pockets.
