The Detroit Lions took a step in the right direction during the 2008 NFL Draft when they selected running back Kevin Smith out of the University of Central Florida with the first pick in the third round. Smith was the nation's leading rusher in 2007 after rushing for 2,567 yards and 29 touchdowns. Ironically, the team he now plays for is the team that drafted running back Barry Sanders out of Oklahoma State in 1989. Smith fell 61 yards short of tying Sanders' single-season rushing record.
