    Hutchinson only getting transition tag!!

    Hutchinson gets transition tag

    MIKE SANDO; The News Tribune
    Published: February 23rd, 2006 11:05 AM
INDIANAPOLIS - The Seattle Seahawks informed guard Steve Hutchinson today that he will be their transition player, a distinction that allows the three-time Pro Bowl choice to solicit offers once NFL free agency begins.

Hutchinson, 28, will receive a one-year, $6.391 million offer as part of the arrangement. He can solicit offers in free agency and the Seahawks can keep him by matching any offer. If Seattle declined to match, Hutchinson’s tenure with the Seahawks would end after five seasons.

NFL teams have until 1 p.m. today to name franchise and transition players. The Seahawks were expected to wait until shortly before the deadline before making the move official.

The transition tag carries risks and opportunities for both sides.

The arrangement could hurt Seattle if another team offers Hutchinson substantially more than the Seahawks want to play. Hutchinson risks the possibility that the market could be softer than anticipated.

Franchise players rarely receive outside offers because the designation requires the signing team to compensate the player’s former team with two first-round draft choices. Hutchinson would have received a one-year offer worth $6.983 million as a franchise player.

Because transition players are more likely to receive outside offers, the likelihood for a long-term deal could improve.

The Seahawks have made retaining Hutchinson among their top offseason priorities. A first-round draft choice from Michigan in 2001, Hutchinson has played an important role in the rise of Seattle's offense to elite status.

The Seahawks led the league in scoring last season on their way to the first Super Bowl appearance in franchise history.

So if front loas a contract offer to him the Seachickens will have a hard time matching it so we could end up with him.

Good move by the Hawks, he's easily one of the best left guards in the league. If it wasn't for him and Walter Jones, Shaun Alexander wouldn't have half the success he had last year.
