Re: History of NFL team nicknames

They should have been named the "Peckers" after Frank Peck.

In 1919, Earl "Curly" Lambeau and George Calhoun pieced together a group in the Green Bay Press-Gazette editorial room with the notion of starting a football team. Lambeau’s employer at the Indian Packing Company - Frank Peck - provided jerseys, equipment and use of its athletic field for practice. Early on, the club was identified as a project of the company, hence Packers became a natural fit.
Hmmmm I though that they got there name from a candy company known for its fudge.
Actually the original name that they came up with was tabled. they wanted to name the team after the owner of the company, Frank Peck.

But The Wisconsin Peckers, The Green Bay Peckers & even Packing Peckers were quickly tossed out for obvious reasons.

However, the Indian Packing Company, owned by Peck, was in the business of packaging Wisconsin cheese & the nickname "Cheesedicks" was soon born.

    ......The nickname still flourishes today.

And now you know -------- the rest of the story!

    ROTF, singer!

That reminds me of my old Midget League...we were the Colts and our main rivals were the Packers...or as we liked to call each other, the Cunts and the Peckers...out of the mouths of babes, indeed!!! LOL

So I have always been a Packer hater...even in Midget League football!!!

I didn't know about the defunct Mpls NFL team names:

    Minneapolis–Marines (1922-24) and Red Jackets (1929-30)
There were more Minnesota teams. I'll have to see if I can dig up the one I once had that lists all the defuct teams, name changes etc. from the begining to present day.
