I didn't know about the defunct Mpls NFL team names:

MinneapolisÃ¢â‚¬â€œMarines (1922-24) and Red Jackets (1929-30)

Don't forget about the Duluth Kelleys (1923-1925) and the Eskimos (1926-1927).

In 1919, Earl "Curly" Lambeau and George Calhoun pieced together a group in the Green Bay Press-Gazette editorial room with the notion of starting a football team. LambeauÃ¢â‚¬â„¢s employer at the Indian Packing Company - Frank Peck - provided jerseys, equipment and use of its athletic field for practice. Early on, the club was identified as a project of the company, hence Packers became a natural fit.

Hmmmm I thought that they got their name from a candy company known for its fudge. :wink:
