Defense now to have coach-player field communication too

Tuesday, April 01, 2008

PALM BEACH, Fla. (AP) Taking another technological step forward, NFL owners approved a communication device for defenses Tuesday....
This was in the "League Rejects Hester Rule" article you posted, but it's more pertinent here:

There was one difference in the 2008 proposal from the 2007 proposal: this time, it was proposed that teams may designate two players who can wear the radio. But they can't be on the field at the same time with the receiver in their helmets.

Patriots coach Bill Belichick endorsed the rule change, but he points out the defense still might not be on equal footing with the offense.

"The problem is there is no quarterback on defense so logistically you have to figure out a way to be able to do that," Belichick says. "It makes it harder on defense because you don't always have one guy out there. As an example for us, [inside linebacker] Tedy Bruschi played a little over half the plays last year, so there are another half the plays when he wasn't on the field. So now what? It's not quite as clean on defense."
Now, I proposed wayyyyyyyyyyy back at the beginning of "Spygate" that, if you were Bill Belichick and you really really really wanted defensive players to get radios in their helmets, then it might not be outside the realm of possibility to plant a video guy on the sidelines to "tape" the opposing team's defensive signals, no matter what the penalty.
In the end, sure, the Patriots are tarnished, but they still have 3 Super Bowls, were in the last Super Bowl, have a top-10 draft pick and now have the rule that they wanted for the past couple of seasons in place.

I don't think that's too far-fetched.
Congratulations. You have just been accepted into the C Mac D Society for Conspiracy Theories...
I'm just tossing it out there.
Wait until Cajun reads it.

Thanks to Josdin for the awesome sig!

Re: Helmet Radios on Defense Approved

My initial reaction is that this is finally, a rule benefiting the defenses.
Everything lately has been aimed at getting more points out of offenses...cuz most people find it more exciting I guess.
I like hard hitting defense, and think this will even out the playing field somewhat.

That would be pretty ingenious of the BellyCheat.
Seems to me it would have passed eventually anyway.
I just don't see a negative to creating this balance.
Control the line, control the time, and give your D a chance to shine!!
