Stats on the last 50 years would be interesting.....if accurate stats existed.
It doesn't matter, the thing to take from this is REPORTED concussions are up.
The time period you reference is too short to be meaningful.
It's what you learn after you know it all that counts.

I didn't really read the "discussion" going on here, but I'd just like to say that I disagree with infidel. That is all.
I am NOT here to provide good football insight or rational observations. I am an emotional 19 year old Viking fan and I expect you to adjust your expectations from my posts.

    Watch this:

probably 85% or more of those hits would be illegal and dangerous in todays NFL. I bet a good number of those were concussions, yet the players played on because they didn't know any better.

    Re: The Harrison Hit

I see people mostly leading with the shoulder....almost no helmet to helmet hits.

You can identify the helmet to helmet hit by watching the helmet of the player being tackled and watching to see if it rebounds violently.

Out of all of these hits, I saw only a couple that did that. Impact was being absorbed by bodies--NOT heads.

Even that Viking QB who seemed to get a helmet to helmet hit was clearly conscious and going for the fumble immediately after the hit.

Contrast that with the intentional 10-stitch helmet to helmet hit on Favre this year where Favre was clearly knocked out for a couple of seconds.
It's what you learn after you know it all that counts.

    Re: The Harrison Hit

I saw a lot of illegal hits, guys going at the head, slamming people, and a few that would be called hits to defenseless players today.

But really I didn't notice any hits with the crown of the helmet, which is the biggest problem in my opinion.

Look at guys wrapping up, tackling center of mass, hitting with the shoulder... it seems like today every hit is either low, at the legs/knees or high and no one wraps up(watch Troy Polamalu, he's the worst). Obviously that's an exaggeration, but form tackles are rare today.

I was taught to put my helmet in the path of the ball carrier, use it to cut him off, wrap, and drive. We were required to take time out of practice to be coached not to use out helmet as a ram. I remember guys making "butt ramming" jokes while we were being taught this because we were required to read the sticker on our helmet which said the helmet should not be used for butting or ramming, I remember the coaches laughing too
