    Re: Gene Upshaw

Its a shame that he died that young.
Still though, it was pretty irresponsible to refuse to name a successor knowing you had a terminal illness.
It will be interesting to see how the NFLPA handles this.

Wow, entirely too young to pass away.
I didn't even know he was sick.
I respected what he did on the field, although I hated what he did in the player's union.

Someone should change the title of the thread to "Gene Upshaw passes away" so we know what it is actually about (other wise get ready for dups)
What exactly did you hate about what he did?
Fucked over retired players time and time again in favor of the new rich.

    Wow, very sad.

Don't be surprised if we see Robert Smith replace Upshaw in the NFLPA.

He will be missed, as he did alot for the players, and making the NFL great.

I don't think Robert ever served on the NFLPA's executive commitee.
A retired player that was very active on the NFLPA committee with success in business, maybe a law degree.

With the CBA coming due, they will need a really tough guy that is well respected by players and owners.

Myself I think someone like Steve Young would be a great choice.

...In 2006, he alienated many retired players after comments he made in response to 325 former AFL and NFL players receiving minimal retirement benefits. When the former players attempted to have the league and the Association consider their plight, Upshaw responded: "I don't work for them. They are not union members and they have no vote." [1] Prior to his death, a campaign was being led by Ravens kicker Matt Stover to oust Gene Upshaw as head of the NFLPA. Kevin Mawae had denied reports of mass callings from players for Upshaw to step down...
The same day that Stover gets recognition as the most famous Raven.

Sounds a bit morbid I think, however, if the big C hits me I want it to be quick like that.

I thought Smith served from 1996 to 2000.
