Games sold out for unprecedented eighth time
Games sold out for unprecedented eighth time

(Oct. 27, 2006) -- It's unprecedented. And it's still going.
All games of the NFL schedule for this Sunday and Monday, Oct. 29 and 30 (Week 8), have sold out in advance of the local TV blackout deadline. That means every NFL game this weekend will be televised in the home-team market for an unprecedented eighth straight week.
Every game this season has been sold out at least 72 hours in advance and televised locally. Previously, the most sellout weekends in one season was four in 2004 and 2005.
It will be the 21st time since the NFL blackout policy took effect in 1973 that blackouts have been lifted for all games on a single weekend. The 21 times have been once in 1998; three times in 2000; once in 2001; four times in 2002 and 2005; and eight times this season.
The NFL blackout policy states that games sold out 72 hours prior to kickoff can be televised in the home city.Zeus wrote:

Re: Games sold out for unprecedented eighth time
Hmmm... seems almost unpossible... Perhaps with the significant changes in tv coverages this season, they've also changed the definition of what "sold out" is. There's definitely a ton of money to be made in televising a game (vs. the gate receipts)... just my conspiracy theory. :-X

Re: Games sold out for unprecedented eighth time
I think if the Vikings ever started getting games blacked out on a regular basis, I'd probably lose interest.
It just seems wrong to me to make your fans unable to watch the game on tv."There is good and there is evil. And evil must be punished. Even in the face of Armageddon I will not compromise."

Blackouts only affect fans in the local viewing area, and the theory is more people will buy tickets if they can't watch it on TV.
It helps keep the revenue up for the team.Zeus wrote:

From what I understand (through really good inside sources) is that if it's Tuesday and the Vikes are in danger of being blacked out, pressure is applied to local large corporations to buy blocks of tickets to guarantee the sellout."happy" wrote:
