    Waiting to Exhale:

Want to know about the next generation of NFL stars? We've got you covered as the clock ticks down toward the 2008 draft. Now that the first wave of big-name free-agent signings has washed up onto shore, it's time to take a step back, exhale and analyze the wreckage. Over the weekend, several big-name free agents found new homes, while others decided to stay put. For guys like Lance Briggs, home, apparently is where the heart is. Or in some longtime backup quarterbacks' cases (Todd Collins, Chris Redman, Shaun Hill, Kyle Orton), home is where the best opportunity for playing time is.

What exactly did some of the weekend's acquisitions do to alter teams' first round draft needs?
    17. Minnesota: The Vikes began the free-agency period by addressing their glaring needs at receiver, sending former first-round pick Troy Williamson to Jacksonville in a trade and signing former Bear Bernard Berrian to a long-term deal. Berrian and 2007 second-round pick Sidney Rice could make for quite an exciting 1-2 duo up in Minnesota. Although the Vikes had one of the top defenses in the league, they may see an elite defensive player like Keith Rivers, Derrick Harvey, or Leodis McKelvin slip to them at 17. Though others tend to disagree, I think they've addressed their needs at receiver with the addition of Berrian. Though you may hear otherwise from the pundits over the next few weeks, a Limas Sweed or DeSean Jackson pick in that spot is far from definite. Minnesota may snag a guy like Florida's Derrick Harvey if he falls.

Thanks to Josdin for the awesome sig!

    Excellent read my friend.
    Thanks.

I don't have Merling that high yet but maybe I should do some more research on this guy.

A quick search shows that he is currently ranked in the to 20 by most value boards and the third best LDE behind only Chris Long an Derrick Harvey at that position.

I guess when a guy that is 6-4, 276lbs posts a 4.7 40 he will move up the boards.
    Hope he isn't a reach.

Looks like Phillips continues to slide.
I wonder if it is because the teams are taking players at different positions based on need or is there something we are missing about him.
He has now slipped out of the top 25 on most boards.

(See the same link above I used for Merling.
Ranked as the 49th best player in the draft.)

    30. Green Bay Packers — Kenny Phillips, S, Miami

I think its just because there are no stud DB's in this years draft.
Last year was LaRon Landry, year before Michael Huff.
They were guys that if you were in the need of a DB, you had to take.
There are no guys like that this year, so teams that have multiple needs that include DB, may be inclined to wait untill the 2nd round and still get the same talent.

    You are probably right.

My guess is that if he is there at 17 they should take him.
We still need to fill two roster spots and the draft is deep at DE.

Damn Marrdro, I agree with you on that one too.

Based on what I've read, there are really only two S worth taking in the 1st.... and a pretty significant drop off after that... there seem to be plenty of DE's, as this class is very deep.

    Trust me, I'm a doctor.

You and me are about the only ones.
I was on another site (I pay for) that has us taking Desean Jackson by most of thier experts or a DE and the DE's are RDE kindof guys.

Might have to quite giving them money.
