I was wondering the same thing.....I don't know if I like the elimination of the 5-yard incidental facemask penalty.
My understanding is that those penalties would now be 15-yard penalties, which seems harsh for something that doesn't affect the play.
The hope would have to be that it would decrease risk of injury.
Probably also increases scoring a bit.
Not sure if my interpretation is correct though - maybe they just don't call those penalties.
My guess is they call it if the head twists and it's 15 yds.Get your facts first, and then you can distort them as much as you please. Mark Twain

When are you going to realize that picking out the 20 bad throws this year and ignoring the 300 good ones does not make your point?

Re: Force out rule removed!
I'm happy with anything that takes a judgement call away from the refs.
The player had posession and was in bounds or not. It is reviewable and rewards the defensive back for making a play. We discussed this some time ago in the following thread.

Re: Force out rule removed!
I like the rule change on forceouts!
Would have been nice in Arizona a few years ago!
Will there be a few plays near the sidelines where we miss out on a reception....but I love the idea of some explosive hits by CB's and Safety's trying to drive receivers out of bounds instead of all the arm tackles these days.
We NEED more of these types of hits!

As far as the facemask penalty being removed....I hope it doesnt turn into a new blocking technique....as I understand it now....as no grab, no foul.
Isn't there some sort of rule about "hands to the face"???
If so, wouldnt the same rule be in effect.....just calling it by a different name?
I'd much rather see the Packers miss the playoffs because of their talent then because of their injuries.

Hated the force out rule.I like the elimination of the force-out rule, but my memory is that the force-out is called maybe 15-20 times/year across the entire league.
So maybe we have one or two plays during the Vike's year that are affected.
Probably not a big deal, but I say make them earn it Cris Carter style.
Couldn't challenge it even if it was bogus.
Talk about affecting a game?
Do you remember the Arizona game a few years ago?

Re: Force out rule removed!
I like both of these changes. The NFL's rules are labrynthine enough without adding in referees' speculations about whether a receiver would have landed inbounds or whether a tackler intended to pull a guy down buy his facemask.
Plus, eliminating the force out rule will hopefully have the effect that passing becomes less effective, bringing inflated QB ratings and scoring back down to Earth. Big offenses may be flashy and exciting, but I much prefer grind-it-out football. And while many of you may strongly disagree with the point I just made, you have to admit that any rule that limits another team's passing game can only help the current Minnesota Vikings.

Re: Force out rule removed!
Now DBs will have to develop a technique to intentionally knock the receiver out of bounds when he is airborne.

The only controversy I can see with the force out is a db getting under a receiver when he goes up and carrying him 5yds. out of bounds. That will now be an incompletion.I like the rule change on forceouts!

Re: Force out rule removed!
Hmmm...
You mean tackle while airborne and carry out of bounds?
